The author takes us all the way through a summary of the political dispute over which country lays claim to the Falklands, to the war preparations by both sides, to the actual battles and final surrender by the Argentinians. But the next day the Argentinians invaded and he and his small Royal Marines garrison found themselves fighting for their lives. We first had the fantastic war, the unreal war created by the media where a little Argentinian propeller plane could attack the Hermes aircraft carrier and sink it: those things were fed to us through the media. Why did Britain and Argentina go to war over a wintry archipelago that was home to an unprofitable colony? With maps, never before seen photographs (including the destroyed armoured vehicles, since found, which were always denied) and full lists of both sides involved, The First Casualty takes the entire Falklands War at a glance and shows us that, as with its forebears above, the first casualty of war really is the truth. Vince Bramley – former 3 Para in the Falklands and veteran of the battles of Mount Longdon and Wireless Ridge – brought us one of the most visceral first-hand accounts of the fighting in the Falklands ever seen.

As this year sees the 35th anniversary of the Falklands War, now might be a time to read a more up to date chronicle. After the war, and through to 1984, he pieced them together again and created one of the most compelling first-hand narratives of the Falklands War by those who were there throughout the invasion, occupation and liberation with everything from the weather to the scraps of news of the task force, the hopes of liberation, the local gossip and the Argentine propaganda as well as a detailed insight into life under military occupation. His account describes his experience from the moment the ship was hit until he was winched to safety.
