I really enjoy writing verse, even though it can be fiendishly difficult. I used to memorise poems as a child and it means a lot to me when parents tell me their child can recite one of my books. When I opened this up at my front door I am not exaggerating when I say my heart SKIPPED A BEAT! This is absolutely the most beautiful children’s book I have ever seen in my life! The colours and illustrations are just GORGEOUS! I was afraid to let my kids read it in case they ripped it! My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes. This is a great book for 5-8 year olds which encourages them to use their knowledge of the alphabet and the animal kingdom to try and guess what animal is coming up next. I also continued to write “grown-up” songs and perform them in folk clubs and on the radio, and have recently released two CDs of these songs.Possibly the most beautiful alphabet book I’ve ever seen! The illustrations are stunning, and the flaps and holes in the pictures that reveal the next creative make the story so much more exciting.
