This allows for 3D optical sectioning of the sample, while avoiding excitation of the sample out of the desired focal plane. Time-resolved two-photon confocal photoluminescence (2P-TRPL) was recently developed to probe carrier lifetimes in semiconductors, 23 and was used successfully to investigate the passivation of CdTe thin film solar cells. 24 Strong two-photon absorption in perovskites has been reported 25–27 and macroscopic 2PPL measurements revealed the existence of different recombination pathways in the bulk and at the surface of films. 28,29 2P-TRPL has also been used to investigate carrier recombination in perovskite single crystals, 30,31 quantum dots 32 and microplates. 33 Three-dimensional tomography has been performed on perovskite crystals using one-photon excitation but the strong absorption coefficient and finite absorption depth 34 means that optical effects such as those at the edges dominate and mask crucial information about the bulk. 35Castro, E.
