The Powernode Edge did particularly well with vocals. In “The Musical Box,” from the Genesis album Nursery Cryme (16/44.1 MQA, Atlantic/Tidal), Peter Gabriel sings with real intimacy in the quieter opening minutes, his breath accenting the lyrics. When Gabriel and Phil Collins sang in harmony, I was right there with them. Easily connect wired sources, like a TV or turntable, with HDMI eARC or the combo analogue/digital input.

Using the BluOS Controller App, select songs from popular streaming services like Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz, SiriusXM, from your own music library through Apple Airplay2, aptX™ HD Bluetooth®, or even a network-connected drive or USB hard drive. COMPACT POWER The Bluesound Edge is a ‘just add speakers’, streaming amplifier that features just about everything you can think of, from Tidal and Spotify Connect to Roon ready and AirPlay2. With built-in MQA it is ready for all Hi-Res streaming options up to 192kHz and 24-bit depth. The Edge has a Quad-Core 1.8GHz ARM® Cortex™ A53 processor and a 32-bit/384khz premium DAC (cut and pasted)! It is all feeling very cutting edge, or rather cutting Edge! Digital audio began like any other new technology. It was amazing and new – limited and imperfect – and naturally became the adopted standard for the next generation. We loved the technology, but to us digital just wasn’t up to par. So, we decided to raise the bar and give music lovers the sound quality they deserved. Sure there were 16-bit CDs, but the audio spectrum contained on the master recordings was the true prize. After more than a decade of trial and error, the time had come. The portable players we all know and love had created a new way of listening to music, but there still wasn’t much heart there. Until now. Enter true, 24-bit hi-res digital audio.Direct digital amplifier technology is inherently suited for digital sources.Analog sources like a turntable, will need conversion to a digital signal. The PowerNode Edge can perform analog– to– digital signal conversion (ADC) to support analog sources.Hardcore vinyl enthusiasts may have an issue with that reality.

A DirectDigital 40-watt-per-channel stereo amplifier maintains the audio signal in the digital domain to the last possible stage, the speaker output stage. (More on this further along in the review.) One final note on steaming lossless files, we are getting into the nitty gritty at this point. There is still some minor compression that happens in transferring the file via Bluetooth. Honestly, it is so minor that I’m not even sure you would notice unless your pouring tens of thousands of dollars into your hardwired system to prove me wrong. In which case, I concede, you win. Like other Bluesound streamers and streaming amplifiers, the Powernode Edge also carries controls such as play, pause or volume on its housing and is also said to be ready for integration into BluOS multi-room or surround setups; due to its compact size, it is supposed to be especially well-suited for smart home applications, to which the wall mount included with the device also wants to contribute.

New Naim Classic 300

An alliance of audiophiles. We are the designers, engineers and individuals who have spent our lives in the music industry. Our founders helped pioneer HiFi in the 70s – innovation and the pursuit of perfection in audio runs deep in our collective DNA. Bluesound’s sole mission is to create innovative wireless audio products and technologies that allow for the most true-to-live performance music reproduction possible, utilizing the most advanced, state-of-the-art digital technology. Furthermore, the Powernode Edge can access music servers wirelessly via Wi-Fi, or be controlled with AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth, as well as supply headphones with music via Bluetooth or operate a subwoofer wirelessly as well as via cable. Further wired connections are available in the form of HDMI eARC, USB for external hard drives, and a combined optical/analog input. Bluesound, the manufacturer known for its affordable digital devices, is launching a new streaming/multi-room speaker – the Pulse M. Connectivity wise, the EDGE offers Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), Ethernet, Two-Way aptX HD Bluetooth, a combo Mini TOSLINK/Stereo 3.5mm input, HDMI eARC (think TV), RCA Subwoofer output (Wireless to PULSE SUB+), a single set of 5-Way Binding Post Speaker Terminals, and USB for Fat32 Formatted storage.

With the latest BluOS firmware update, Bluesound extends the functionality of the Pulse Soundbar 2i and the Powernode 2i integrated streaming amplifier by adding an optional surround mode especially for stereo sources. The Powernode Edge connects to your home network automatically when an ethernet cable is plugged into its LAN port. Connecting wirelessly is easily done through the BluOS Controller app. A few moments after the unit is powered up, it becomes ready for network connection in hotspot mode; a flashing green LED turns solid to indicate this status. Once ready, you launch the Add A Player wizard in the BluOS Controller app, which searches for and lists available players, and select the Powernode Edge. (This wizard is also used to connect the Pulse Sub+ subwoofer.) Next, you connect the Powernode Edge to your Wi-Fi network: on iOS, the BluOS app discovers it automatically; on Android, you use a wizard to select and log in to your Wi-Fi network. The status indicator turns blue once connection is established. This process may sound involved, but it took me less than five minutes to complete. The analog input utilizes a 3.5-millimeter mini plug that would most likely necessitate an RCA to 3.5-millimeter cable, which is workable but not ideal. The POWERNODE EDGE is the perfect segue into “just add speakers” HiFi for the streaming age, combining streaming sources, control and amplification in a sleek and affordable device.

AirPlay 2 lets you play music or podcasts from wireless stereo components throughout your house — all in syncAt the rear of the unit, there is a small selection of connectors, including a pair of speaker terminals, an HDMI eARC port for a TV, a 3.5mm combo digital optical input, a USB-A port for connecting a storage drive, plus an output for a subwoofer output next to an Ethernet port. Most people will probably use the Edge’s built-in dual-band Wi-Fi to connect to a home network and stream music. And although the Edge doesn’t have endless connection possibilities, there are enough options for handling sources like a turntable or a CD player. The first album I listened to through the wireless earphones was the Grateful Dead’s Cornell 5/8/77 (24/96 FLAC, Rhino / Qobuz). This legendary concert includes what many argue is the greatest version of “Morning Dew” the Dead ever delivered. Jerry Garcia’s snake-like guitar lines and Phil Lesh’s loping bass lead the listener through a 13-minute musical journey full of peaks and valleys. The song builds to an astonishing climax that begins around the 11-minute mark. Guitars, drums, and keyboards twist into an intense whirling vortex that continues for nearly two minutes before Garcia brings it down with the plaintive closing lyric “I guess it doesn’t matter anyway.” The detail that emerged from the vast acoustic space in this recording with the wireless earphones was truly rewarding. Unfortunately, our Installation Service excludes all gas appliances. It is the customer’s responsibility to find a gas safe engineer to connect the appliance. Any work conducted by a third part gas safe engineer will be at the customer’s expense and we will not accept any liability for their work. The Powernode Edge may not be an all-round musical wonder, but it’s competent, compact and versatile – a neat solution. We’d love to see more hi-fi products of this style entering the market as it could form the basis of a truly modern music system. These Kevlar woofer bookshelves are rather innovative and offer a crisp, neat and fast presentation that has much to endorse them. I’ve set the Bluesound subwoofer at 50Hz using the App to support the quoted frequency Range of 52Hz – 22KHz (±6dB). The Edge drives them with ease and as a family, we have no complaints about the sound being offered by both the Podspeakers and the Edge. Jern Speakers
