At the end of the day, you want something that suits your keyboard. So for choosing which style is best for you, keep in mind the size and weight of your keyboard and also your own routine as to how you like to play it. Double Tier Stands On top of that, a regular electric keyboard will have a different form factor than that of a MIDI controller keyboard. You can adjust the height of the stand overall, the positioning and height of the 2nd tier support, and the positioning of the legs. The great thing about this keyboard stand is the overall load capacity, which is a whopping 250 lbs with the top tier being at 75 lbs.

These are the most common styles of keyboard stands. However, there are more types which are mostly different versions of the above only e.g. double X-style. In addition to the shape there is another category that distinguishes these stands which is tiers. All of the above are essentially single tier but there are double and triple tier stands as well that can keep two and three keyboards respectively. These are good for those who want more than one keyboard in front of them simultaneously. Do these require assembly? Portability is important if you are a musician who often travels with the keyboard. For example, suppose you have to carry the stand around often for performances, jams, or practices. In that case, you should choose a lightweight stand that is easy to assemble and disassemble and preferably portable enough to carry around in a case. Stability The optimal height is when your arms are parallel to the floor while your fingers can rest comfortably on the keys. Portability There’s obviously not a whole lot to say about this stand that can’t be seen by looking at a picture of it. One thing that is very surprising about this stand is it’s load capacity though. Being a single X-type and not a double, the weight it can hold sits at a whopping 130 lbs! A-frame stands work great for housing multiple instruments, good for storage or display purposes - we found stands in this style capable of holding six synths at a time. So if you have a lot of vintage synths in a project studio, for example, and don’t necessarily need to play them all that often, A-frames are a good way to go.

Heavy-Duty Adjustable Stand for Stage Pianos and Other Keyboards

For regular gigging, it’s important to consider overall portability, plus how long it takes to set up and break down a stand before and after the show. If you need a stand for home or studio use though, it’s more likely to be a semi-permanent setup, making this less of an issue. The height is adjustable for virtually all of the keyboard stands but the range varies from one to another. You have to ensure that the stand you are buying is commensurate with your height i.e. you should be able to play them standing and sitting. As for weight, the weight of the stand itself should be less because a heavy stand can be difficult to carry or assemble. Its own weight does not really have any effect on its stability and durability. Heavy Duty A-Style – these styles of keyboard stands are designed to hold a lot of weight and a high number of keyboards. Now, the only use that most folks would find out of an A-frame stand is for storage purposes. Coming in as my overall favorite is this table style keyboard stand from Konig and Meyer. K&M has built a great reputation for themselves over the years and it’s easy to see why with this very well built stand. There really isn’t a whole lot to say about the YKA7500 that can’t already be assumed. It’s very well built, sturdy, and likely to outlive most of your gear. The one downside to this keyboard stand is that the assembly instructions are hard to follow and you’d do well to cut out a chunk of your day to put it together.

Z-Style: This is yet another common style that is loved by many. The Z-shaped structure is very easy to fold and carry so those who like their stands to be portable prefer this. Also, it is kind of like a table so still very stable. It can be adjusted for both width and height so you can virtually fit all kinds of keyboards. The best keyboard stands come in a variety of styles, literally from A to Z, but which one is right for you? The ones on our list fall into five main categories: You can go for a stand with screws to secure the keyboard to prevent any accidents. Also, you can go for a sturdy designed stand to have less wobbliness while playing. X-Style (Single-X or Double-X) – probably the most common option out there both because of convenience and price. If you’re just looking for a simple keyboard stand that’s portable, easy to set up, and a little on the cheaper side, then this a great route to go. Other than that, you really can’t go wrong here. With Yamaha as the name behind this stand, you can be sure it’s a worthy investment. The column amount is also another important point, as the double x-style designs are more stable and sturdy than single-X designs. After all, the last thing you want is to have your expensive keyboard falling and breaking. It goes without saying that an 88-key keyboard is going to be bulkier than a 49-key keyboard. Central Arm – these are attractive looking keyboard stands with a higher level of functionality. The central arm is easily adjustable and doesn’t make your setup look like an eye-sore. More times than not, these types of stands are only available in a single tier option, which brings me to the next style… Triple Tier Stands are designed to hold up to three keyboards and these too come in a variety of styles. However, most commonly you would find these in table style or A-frame. Since they hold three keyboards at a time, they are designed with sturdy materials and are obviously heavier than single or double tier. That does not mean that they are not portable, many of these can be folded and carried anywhere with quite a lot of ease. Sizes & Weight Some of X-Style stands are suitable only for smaller and lighter keyboards. So when buying this one you have to ensure that the one you buy can support the weight of your keyboard i.e. if you have a big keyboard go for a heavy duty stand. Mixer Style

Table Style: this is pretty self-explanatory and this one is very stable as well and provides a lot of leg room. They are often dubbed as mixer style as they are also used for housing mixers. You have four legs just like that in a table that can be adjusted for height. X-Style: This is pretty common and less costly among all the styles. The legs of this stand are like an X and you have several height options (usually up to 5). It takes less floor space and comes in both regular and heavy duty forms. It is designed in such way to provide balance, stability, and lightness. For a 2 Tier keyboard stand, the K & M Spider Stand is the best thing you can find. First off it is light yet super sturdy thanks to its all-aluminum construction. Secondly, the column design with arms spreading out for placing keyboards makes it very space-efficient. You get the same stability as you would with an X-style or A-frame one. However, the best part is that it is highly portable as you can just simply fold it and take it with you. This is why it is best suited for those who are very mobile. Triple Tier Stands Single X-type keyboard stands are more affordable and better suited for stationary use at home or in the studio. The price point and ease of use are the only reasons why I’d suggest a single x design. That being said, they are made for one job and they certainly can do that job well enough. We will get into the different types of keyboard stands soon, but that also plays a part here. An X-style stand will not have as much legroom underneath for instance. With that, if you like sitting a little closer to your keyboard when you play, then you might want to veer away from that style. Keyboard Stand Types Durability is another important aspect if you want to have a stand with a long life. Most stands are made of steel and are highly durable, but the important factor here is the joints and the adjustment systems. Price Now, this wouldn’t be much of a list of keyboard stands without mentioning an option from Yamaha. They have an abundance of options out there, but this single tier X-type stand is among the best that they have to offer.
