In fact, wonderland has been a rich territory for many generations of designers – and the fashion world, in turn, has shaped our understanding of Alice and her coterie of characters. The latter designed a special edition cover of Carroll’s book in 2015, praising it in the accompanying introduction for its note of curiosity and mistrust of adult authority. It being long out of copyright anyone can put together a 150th birthday edition for it, but this is one of the more distinctive efforts, for it comes with the help of Dame Vivienne Westwood.

Immediately following her introduction is a “Climate Map”, which shows the area of land that will become uninhabitable if the earth’s temperature rises by 5 degrees Celsius. Discover the joy of reading with us, your trusted source for affordable books that do not compromise on quality.Unless noted, some photos may belong to their respective owners and are used under the principle of fair use, according to Section 107. Featuring an all-Black cast, the shoot starred model Duckie Thot as Alice in baby blue and platform heels, and drag superstar RuPaul as a magnificently imperious Queen of Hearts. Grace Coddington, former creative director at American Vogue, described it as an “exhausting, exhilarating” and “magical” shoot, and Vodianova brought a combination of wide-eyed innocence and sulky humour to the photos that seemed to befit a contemporary understanding of Alice.

By this point, you’d be hard-pressed to find a designer, photographer or stylist who hasn't jumped down the rabbit hole or slipped through the looking glass, whether it’s via Miuccia Prada’s love of headbands, Alice Temperley’s invocations of Alice’s escapism, or Comme Des Garçons making T-shirts featuring customised versions of Tenniel’s illustrations. The wonderland she explores – containing its mad hatters, hookah-smoking caterpillars, literal floods of tears, and a murderous Queen of Hearts – is just as famous, transcending the pages to take on a life of its own. This special edition includes Through the Looking Glass as well as the original illustrations by Sir John Tenniel that have been especially requested by Vivienne Westwood. Previously the book has been introduced by Michael Irwin, a professor of English literature at the University of Kent, and Hugh Haughton, a professor of English literature at York University, who tells me that he thinks Alice in Wonderland is, “the greatest text of dream realism ever written”. Alice and Westwoord are the perfect collaboration and it's usable and enjoyable to read- it's such a good gift for adults and kids who love Alice! It was a wish from Westwood, who explains: « When you read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, you’ll see the original drawings by Tenniel which also help to make the book so sensational.
