Crafts are always a learning curve so don’t compare your chapter one to someone else’s chapter five. Twinkl Kids TV or Twinkl Parents have many educational videos on various aspects of the school curriculum. Your project will, generally, not resemble anything close to what you are trying to make until at least 3/4 of the way through when you will hit the “how on earth is this ever going to look like that” wall, which you must punch your way through with steely determination. It all comes together near the end and everyone, experienced or a complete beginner, feels exactly the same way.’ Enjoy and don’t aim for perfection. There are no rights and wrongs to your finished creation and feel free to add as much or as little detail as you wish. Enthusiasm is the key to most things and with a little of that you won’t go far wrong. Read each section before starting so you have an idea of where it is headed.

Start by taking your white wool roving and foam it into an egg shape to make the body of your Robin. I used the egg-shaped cookie cutter to help me make the form.

See our Needle Felted Penguin and Hearts for more Needle Felting Projects for beginners. Materials Needed to create your Needle Felted Robin Unlike the American Robin, the British Robin is a colourful little bird who is a mainstay in our garden, fields, and towns throughout the year – they stake their territory and can be quite vicious to other robins that venture into the area. I’m really happy with the finished result, especially since this is my first attempt at needle felting. And I have to say that needle felting is a very therapeutic hobby, just stabbing fabric over and over again until it finally morphs into the shape that you want! Now it’s time to add in 2 wings – for the wings, I formed the shapes away from the Robin in my hands and then added them onto the Robin and felted them in place. Then start to stab. As you stab push the needle into all of the notches and then pull out in the same direction.

Once the head was attached and covered in brown wool roving, I cut out some of the red wool roving in an oval shape. I laid this over the breast part of the robin’s body and also the face. Then I proceeded to attach the head by using the felting needle, stabbing it into the wool balls over and over until it took shape. Step 5 Once I was satisfied with the robin’s body and head, it was time to make the wings. To do this, I cut out two teardrop shapes of the brown wool roving and needle felted them individually against a sponge to make them into a dense shape. The first thing I did to make my needle felted robin was to create the main body and head shape that I could felt around. Rather than waste my wool roving for this, I simply created two little balls of wall in different sizes, from a ball of spun yarn. See pics above. Step 2 Besides these robin crafts,, we’ve got so many more fun educational activities for your little one at Twinkl. Once you have added all of the decorations and felt features, cut around both robin outlines carefully. Then, place the two layers together and seam the edge using a blanket stitch or a whip stitch. Make sure to add stuffing to the centre of the Christmas decoration and ribbon to the top, before you complete the seam. And there you have it, a felt robin Christmas decoration ready for your Christmas tree. What Other Christmas Craft Ideas Using Felt Can I Make?

Among the cohosts, each will feature a fabulous book that connects with the topic and then create a craft, activity or experience that you can use with your children. We wanted our Robin’s to hand from our tree, so we added a small red ribbon at the top, We stitched it before moving on to the next step. With the egg formed it’s time to add the features that make up the robin – starting with its bright red breast. Take some of the red wool roving and place on the part of the egg shape that will be the red breast and face of your robin. So, why not just decide to have some fun and have a go at this Needle Felting Robin tutorial this Christmas? Hope you enjoy! X You will need Robins are very territorial birds. This means that they like to own their own space and keep intruders out.

An egg-shapedcookie cutter is optional and helped me form my shape at first. How to Make your Beginner 3D Needle Felting Project – Winter Robin Once the egg starts to form remove from the cookie cutter and hold in your hand and on the pad moving the egg around go in at angles at either end. The simple shape is perfect for developing early cutting and sewing confidence. Felt at a sideways angle (keeping the needle straight) to reduce needle marks and help keep the shape For children that are more competent with a needle and thread then you could just pin the felt together and skip the glue altogether. Then we glued round the edge of the robin leaving about an inch gap for the stuffing to go in (if you have younger children then you can skip the stuffing as they look beautiful without it). Once the glue had dried then we stitched the edge using brown embroidery thread making sure we didn’t stitch the gap that was left for stuffing.
