It was different in a way I can't quite place, however I loved the book as it progressed and got me deeper into its story (and deeper in love with the Umbra King 🤭) The characters were all nicely planned and I'm actually not a huge fan of fantasy, because at times there is too much made up information about the worlds that get me confused quickly, but this really impressed me in ways I thought it couldn't. This book was weird because at some points you felt IN IT and at others you felt weirdly detached from it all. The Umbra, alongside with Void Reaver, Ducky D00M, Ripped Elf, Gatekeeper and Mecha-claus are the only enemies that can damage the base without colliding with it. Rory a vigilante serial killer who hunts down the wicked and exacts her own form of justice finds her luck has run out and has been caught and convicted of her crimes and is now facing 500 years in the prison realm of Vincula ruled by Caius, The Umbra King and a powerful monster in his own right. The enemies turned to lovers (or at least lust-ers) far too quickly, and the badass MC seemed to have everything happening TO her but caused no change through her actions. After the brutal murder of her twin sister, Aurora ‘Rory’ Raven spends years forging herself into a ruthless vigilante killer.

The Umbra appeared in a short video that promoted the MERRY2021 code, where it would give you a present. The closet comparison I could make is a YA, dumbed down version of the society Crescent City, mixed in with some predictable actions and narratives throughout the story. I would set this entire realm ablaze to keep you safe, and if you think I’m bluffing, you haven’t been paying attention. Lorelei will be forced to hide herself even more, and dress and act like the lady she is not, all for a chance to get close enough to the King to kill him, and free her people and other beings from persecutions. I wish the information given during the first 5 or so chapters had been shown in smaller pieces throughout the book as needed, as opposed to being written as an aside to the story;The Umbra King is fast paced, almost too fast at times, and left me wanting for detail on both the side characters and the world itself!

It’s such a great story, the FMC is strong, badass and totally relatable and just as hot as the MC who’s a misunderstood villain…The KING with control of his shadow friends 🔥 🌶🌶🌶 Extremely excited for the sequel. Feeling like an outsider looking in, she tries to acclimate to her new life, but she can’t shake the feeling that something, or someone, is missing.

It's nice reading a story showing that rarity can figure things out like twilight and that she's not always being overdramatic or superficial. The one thing that kept this book from being utterly spectacular is that even though the characters were slightly older, there were aspects of this that felt very juvenile. Secondly, she was built up (and admittedly started) as a badass vigilante character hellbent on justice for her murdered sister. Dume, Sam, Lauren, and Bellina may be side characters but they bring a depth to this world that completely levels the story up. She's so brutal with her kills and consistent with her MO that she's branded The Butcher, as she strings them up on meat hooks. So I will be honest and admit I had never heard of this book until it showed up in my adult Bookish Box subscription. There's one moment where Rory is led to believe something false about Caius (you'll know what I mean when you read it) but it is quickly resolved and doesn't lead to a distressful chapter-spanning breakup.However, the closer she gets to saving her kingdom, the more she realizes a singular problem stands in her way. When an eclipse happens, the celestial body caught within the umbra of the overlapping object experiences a total eclipse.
