Bitter, jealous, and feeling abandoned, Luther had to deal with an increasingly violent rebellion by the anti-Imperial nobility.

I can happily say that Angels of Caliban is another solid entry by Gav and although slighter than many other of it's contemporaries in page length it manages to cover a suprising amount of ground and deal with events of some import. Here the primarch of the Dark Angels decides to flush out the Night Haunter by cracking down on the civilian populace and imposing martial law. To accomplish this Luther will have to navigate the questionable motives of his inner council, suppress any Space Marines loyal to Lion El’Jonson, and deal with the fleet of ships that have arrived unannounced in the solar system. Inheritor is a standalone tale that takes place during events portrayed in Betrayer, Vengeful Spirit and The Unremembered Empire. The Unforgiven – Annael, Telemenus, Grand Master Belial, Supreme Grand Master Azrael, Chaplain Asmodai, Chaplain Sapphon, Chief Librarian Ezekiel, Astelan, Cypher.Exiling Luther and the others had been an act of leadership, a response to events that sent a message to Luther, but it had been misheard. If anything, he might be the biggest architect of the fall from grace the Unforgiven experienced, by playing all sides at once. The Dark Angels took the bait, and though Wyrmwood was boarded by the Unforgiven and heavily damaged Vashtorr succeeded in acquiring the last fragment of The Key he required.

Ravenwing was promising with a few niggling flaws and sadly was the highlight of his Legacies of Caliban series which became far too character focused to the detriment of the overall narrative. I’m really looking forward to the next novel in the series: John French’s Praetorian of Dorn, which should be out in August. Astelan continues to get fleshed out, with his motives becoming murkier and murkier, throwing a lot of his actions in the 40k timeline into a new light. It was only because he wrote this novel that I was looking forward to another Dark Angels Heresy book. The Thirteenth Wolf is a standalone tale, but takes place against the backdrop of the battles that rage in Prospero Burns and A Thousand Sons. Likewise the wider Dark Angels story, although it might require a little catching up to be fully on top of things – it’s been 27 books and over 7 years since Fallen Angels, with their story previously continued via a novella and a handful of short stories. Maybe then he wouldn’t have been so welcoming to Typhon when his Death Guard blundered into the Caliban system. Don’t worry, I won’t count all the ways, because I could fill a two-hour podcast with my love for this book.

I enjoyed the tensions between Roboute and the Lion, as well as Sanguinius’s grappling with his visions (and the impact Curze’s visions have on the new Emperor’s interpretation of his own). I was recently invited to participate in the Shadow of Ullanor episode, and the episode should go live soon.Do yourself a favor and pick this book up before the Siege of Terra starts, you won’t be disappointed. I think that legion has given him more room to invent and create original and very interesting background, etc. The interactions between Luther and the Dark Angels on Caliban also propel the novel along with the velocity of a Thunderhawk gunship. That's not to say that there are not highlights here There are some standout scenes which are excellently done, and Luther is portrayed as a likeable but conflicted character. The Lion does have a few redeeming scenes, and he does seem aware of how broken he is, but he does nothing to correct it throughout the book.

Suffice to say, despite some initial missteps, the story of the First Legion has improved considerably in the last few years and I hold Angels of Caliban to be the culmination of that entire effort as it is a significant turning point in the narrative of the First Legion during the Heresy. Tyler is a life long painter and hobbyist and took home his first Golden Demon award at the 2012 Chicago Games Day with a follow up at the 2013 North American Games Day. Interview with Radio Free Isstvan, The Independent Characters, 40k Theories, Forge The Narrative, Eye of Horus, Combat Phase, Nerdai, and Life After The Cover Save. The opening of the “loyalist” Dark Angels in Angels of Caliban is when they relieve a world of Ultramar that has suffered occupation by a stray force of World Eaters, remnants of Lorgar and Angron’s Shadow Crusade into Guilliman’s star realm. Now he is part of the Imperial Triumvirate alongside Roboute Guilliman and the new Emperor, Sanguinius.
