Description

When I read this story aloud to students a few years ago, I remember thinking it is one of these crossover novels that speak to children and adults on different, but equally satisfying levels. I read this several times as a kid. I was most fascinated by the experiments at NIMH (a real government organization!) and would read just those chapters over and over. It’s an intelligent book and expects young readers to understand it. It is not condescending to the young audience.

In 2012 it was ranked number 33 on a list of the top 100 children's novels published by School Library Journal. She meets Nicodemus, the rat leader, and then is taken to the library to wait for him. She also starts learning about the Plan of the Rats of NIMH. While in the library, she meets a girl rat named Isabella, who starts to tell her some things about life in the rat colony. Isabella also tells her about Jenner, who deserted the colony because he didn’t agree with the Plan. Mrs. Frisby doesn’t get to ask Isabella any more questions because Nicodemus comes in with Mr. Ages. They talk to Mrs. Frisby about moving her house and about the dangers of the cat, Dragon. She agrees to put powder in Dragon’s food. Chapters 14 - 23Mrs. Frisby takes the shortcut home, but she has to go next to the cat, Dragon, that all animals fear. She finds a crow named Jeremy that is tied to a tree, and the cat will eat him if he doesn't escape. Mrs. Frisby risks her own life to free the crow by chewing through the strings, and he, in return, drops her off at her own house. Between 1989 and 1990, I took some additional college courses in hopes of getting a teaching certificate. That all went for naught when we moved to California. I did take three courses at The College of William and Mary that I loved, and I'm grateful I had the opportunity to experience. EXCLUSIVE: An animated series based on Robert C. O’Brien’s Rats of NIMH book series is in the works at Fox as the broadcast network further bolsters its animation drive. the concept of a colony of rats working together with a little old lady mouse to go on summer vacation: fantastic, whimsical, a childhood-defining masterpiece

Still, it seemed to us that the main reason we were hated must be that we always lived by stealing. From the earliest times, rats lived around the edges of human cities and farms, stowed away on men's ships, gnawed holes in their floors and stole their food. Sometimes we were accused of biting human children; I didn't believe that, nor did any of us⎼unless it was some kind of a subnormal rat, bred in the worst of city slums. And that, of course, can happen to people, too.” Don't even get me started on the topic of rats. I'd rather face a Tyrannosaurus rex than a rat, and I'm not kidding).

and all the strange rats we saw looked, to us, surprisingly weak and puny. So we were set apart from even our own kind.” One was an introduction to linguistics class, which I'll probably mention when I review The Bird Way. I understand that it is illogical and irrational that a creature so small should provoke such terror in me, but it's true.
