This challenge resonates just as powerfully today, rooted not in a particular time or culture but in the human condition itself. My dad read this too me when I was little, but it was one of the first things I wanted to read to myself when I was old enough.

The Adventures of Odysseus by Hugh Lupton | Goodreads The Adventures of Odysseus by Hugh Lupton | Goodreads

An enjoyable read, a good introduction to the story, with lovely illustrations and as usual for Barefoot Books, a quality produced book. Before departing Hades, the Greeks talk with some of their old war comrades, including Achilles and Ajax. The Adventures of Odysseus does a great job of telling the stories and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. After two days of swimming, Odysseus reaches the land of the Phaeacians and their kind king, Alcinoüs. This is not unique to this book and can be a common occurrence in children's retellings, as action is chosen over character development when only a certain number of pages can be used.He imagines the wonderful welcome he will receive upon his arrival; however his journey home becomes a huge challenging adventure in which he encounters a gruesome cyclops (but luckily escapes his wrath! But, when they moor at a strange island, and blind the giant cyclops Polyphemus, Odysseus shouts his name during bloating to the monster about who blinded it. Only for some of the remaining crew to be munched on by the six-headed monster, Scylla, who was waiting round the corner. I love how this abridged version of the Odyssey is pretty simple, but very informative and perfect for the age it is written for.

Ancient Greek mythology: 10. The Odyssey - BBC Teach

They find the cave empty - apart from some of the shepherd's animals and cheeses - so they slaughter a lamb and enjoy a roast meal. When Poseidon found out what had happened, he vowed to prevent Odysseus from getting home to Ithaca for another ten years. In his absence, his son, Telemachus, has grown into a man, and his wife, Penelope, is besieged by suitors who assume Odysseus is dead. The illustrations are beautifully done and give it a fresh perspective for students who are learning myths. Odysseus is more human and practical-minded, relying on his own sharp wits rather than trusting himself to divine aid, as other characters do.
