I was so excited to receive an ARC for the new Alex Cross book and it was as good as I had hoped. I absolutely adore this series and feel like I know Alex, Bree, Nana Mama and the gang. Also in on this most intriguing case is the world’s bestselling true-crime author, who sees patterns everyone else misses. The writer, Thomas Tull, calls the Family Man murders the perfect crime story. He believes the killer may never be caught. Ben Corbett is lawyer to the underprivileged and downtrodden in 1900s Washington, DC. Out of the blue, President Theodore Roosevelt invites Ben to the White House, asking him to investigate a resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan in Ben’s own home town.

As two prominent figures are found murdered Alex and his team must pull all their resources together to solve the crime, while also working on other cases at the same time. I don’t want to give much away as you just need to delve in and read it!! But I will say, have the tissues at the ready for there is one heartbreaking part to this story. This a rollercoaster ride, never letting go of the pace right til the end. I cannot recommend James Patterson books more. A leader has fallen, and Alex Cross joins the procession of mourners from Capitol Hill to the White House. Then a sniper’s bullet strikes a target in the heart of D.C. Alex Cross’s wife, Bree Stone, must either solve the case or lose her position as the city’s newly elevated chief of detectives.

One last comment regarding the movies; I found Morgan Freeman to be a huge disappointment as the actor chosen to portray Alex Cross. Don’t misunderstand me – I LOVE Morgan Freeman!! However, in my mind’s eye the actor most well suited for the role would have been Denzel Washington, as I felt he was closer in age to Alex Cross (whose children were young throughout the Cross series). I would have envisioned Michael Clarke Duncan (from “The Green Mile”, and now deceased) – as his best friend, Sampson. I would have LOVED this pairing, and believe that many more of the Alex Cross books would have been brought to the big screen. When Alex's former patient turns up dead, he sets out to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death. She is an ex-patient of his, and as the blurb speculates - maybe more? She was once a high flyer on the political scene, thanks to her marriage to the vice president and as a socialite and philanthropist, she lived her life in the spotlight. How has she ended up murdered? Alex must find out. The author has not only written a great number of books but has also made a concerted effort to enrich the lives of others. He has donated over a million books for students to read and often would focus on schools as well as youth programs that did not have the proper resources. The author donated over seven million to libraries in the schools and classrooms in America as well as two million to indie bookstores.

Is it just me or does it feel like FOREVER since the last Alex Cross installment? Can you believe it's now book #28! This time around brings some real sadness for John Sampson (no spoilers) so he may not play such a pivotal role within the crime investigation as per usual but his own story plays alongside. Detective Alex Cross arrests renowned plastic surgeon Elijah Creem for sleeping with teenage girls. Now, his life ruined, Creem is out of jail, and he’s made sure that no one will recognize him-by giving himself a new face. Can you believe this is the 28th Alex Cross novel? I can't. It seems like only yesterday I was reading Along Came A Spider and although I've maybe missed a few Cross thrillers along the way, I love dipping into this so familiar series and getting my fix of the lovely Cross family. As Cross delves deeper into the case, his worst fears materialise when he receives a chilling call from his deadliest adversary, the Mastermind.

As usual, there are a couple of other storylines mixed in - Bree has a series of unsolved rapes to deal with. Alex continues to see clients privately as a psychologist. Nana Mama is in the kitchen as usual and the children are growing up fast. Deadly Cross opens with a double murder of a respected School Principal and the ex-wife of the Vice President of the US, shot and found in fragrante delicto during a midnight tryst in the VP’s wife’s Bentley. There’s another ongoing Police investigation into a serial rapist and murderer of teenaged girls from a small chunk of the Metro area, who’s escaped capture for over 15 years. Recently two girls were abducted and found violated and murdered about 48 hours after their kidnapping. The main story follows the shooting of a high profile socialite who also happens to be the Vice Presidents ex-wife and the local school headteacher, with side stories of teenage girls being abducted, raped and murdered and a smaller still storyline of the very rich and famous being shot in the ass! As with all Patterson novels, there is plenty of focus on the crimes but equal time is given to Cross and his family, including his best friend John Sampson. One of the storylines featuring Sampson and his family will definitely mean more if you’ve kept up with the series and/or read the last few books but this book read great as a standalone. Detective Alex Cross is faced with a heart-wrenching situation when his niece goes missing. As he investigates, he becomes deeply concerned that her disappearance may be connected to a series of terrifying abductions and murders plaguing the entire country. In another aside, there’s some nutcase who is going around shooting DC politicians in the ass (literally) and Bree is having a tough time explaining to Metro Police Commissioner Dennison why, she’s unable to prevent and catch the perpetrator. So in essence, there are three mysteries to solve and Alex Cross is requested to assist in all three by Bree and also the VP – for his ex-wife’s murder. Alex has a personal connection to Kay (the VP’s ex-wife), who he’s known for many years. Kay was not just known for her socialite status, but for also being a conscientious person with a heart of gold!
