While the plot was fun overall, i do think the Trials aspect could've been better. I expected them to way longer and a little more... exciting. the actual story felt a little overwhelmed by the romance and the world was also barelyy developed at all 🫤🫤

this one was truly meant for those who love romantic fantasy, it had every element that you yearn for! I am a die hard fan of the forbidden love trope & this one definitely hit the mark. Pae & Kai were to die for. I was unbelievably obsessed with every interaction between them, the tension & banter was so fulfilling and perfect for those that love rivals to lovers & emily henry banter! She is the embodiment of a bad decision. The twin of danger and desire. The fine line between deadly and divine. And I can feel myself drowning.” ~ 🤭🤭 The book follows Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary, into the Trials of Ilya where she will either succeed or die. But in this Trials, she faces people that have been training for years for these games… sound familiar? wow. this book was absolutely phenomenal. I completely understand why I have only heard good things, because it lived up to the expectations & hype! I finished this one in basically one sitting, it was addicting! No one knows this better than Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary posing as an Elite. When she unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya’s princes, Kai Azer, she’s thrown into the Purging Trials, a brutal competition to showcase her ‘Elite’ powers.

Please be aware that the delivery time frame may vary according to the area of delivery and due to various reasons, the delivery may take longer than the original estimated timeframe. let me start by saying that i didn’t (and still don’t) know who lauren is on booktok. so this review is unbiased as possible. 🫶🏻 (please don’t forget that a 3 stars isn’t a bad rating either.) But the best part of this book was definitelyyy the ROMANCE 🤭🤭🤭 I love a tension-filled romance in fantasies and when i tell this one had tension, it had TENSIONNN 😩😩🦋🦋 The chemistry was insanee and i was eating up their scenes like a starved man 🤌🤌 Kai was literally so obsessed with her and we love to see it. It also had all the good tropes- knife to the throat? Tending to their wounds? Who did this to you? Training scenes? Literally all in here ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 Kai and Paedyn are such a good couple 🥺🥺 Paedyn is an intelligent, strong main character who I was rooting for from the beginning. She is calculating, perceptive and stubborn - a perfect match for the other half of this book's perspective, Kai. The slow burn is EVERYTHING, and their banter/dynamic made me fall in love with this book. i can’t even explain how much i’m in love with kai and paedyn. their relationship is my new favorite thing in the world. THE TENSION. literally died dead. And this we can see in how the whole plot is based on The Hunger Games. The Trials are the Games, the Elites are the Capitol, we even have the interviews and sponsors. Paedyn is clearly a Katniss variant and Adeana is a combination of Prim and Cinna. These similarities are unabashedly thrown at the reader’s face. The host of the interviews even has bright blue hair, I’m not joking. Also... I will say that I'm a fan of the Young Elites and that worldbuilding is similar but has better tangible impacts on the world. A lot of the time in YA fantasy worldbuilding will only be a precursor to plot without actually shaping the world). (ALSO. The fact that the desert was right next to the city and forests and shit was so funny to me like that's not how topology works at all). (ALLSOOOO this is so tiny I'm sorry but the fact that they have bananas in this setting just makes me believe that there was some equivalent of the Banana Wars in this fantasy world. and i'M sajifodjsof). i was hooked from the beginning to the end. the plot was so entertaining and even though i haven’t seen hunger games, i need to watch it after seeing many people compare this book to the movie ( series? idk really) The book is needlessly long, with self indulgent scene after scene that served little purpose to the plot or to further character growth. Yes, I know they're fun to write. But it became very repetitive and very boring very fast. The tropes are fun, knife to throat and whatever etc etc, but I have to wonder why there are like 4 different instances of it and why they're almost identical in purpose and tone. And, what's worse, they're very telling rather than showing. The author needed to kill some darlings, kill MANY darlings. Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, this young adult fantasy follows the forbidden romance between a powerful prince and an ordinary girl as they try to survive their kingdom’s grueling laws pitting them against each other.

No one knows this better than Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary posing as a Psychic to blend in with the Elites. When she unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya’s princes, Kai Azer, she’s thrown into the Purging Trials, a brutal competition showcasing the Elites’ powers. Kai Azer is now Ilya’s Enforcer, loyal to his brother Kitt, the new King. He has vowed to find Paedyn and bring her to justice. Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya . . . The exceptional. The Elites. The Elites have possessed powers for decades, gifted to them by the Plague, while those born Ordinary are just that, banished from the kingdom and shunned from society. This was a good decent book. it was just that I’ve seen it all before? I mean it’s really a strong debut with a solid storyline and interesting characters and world building. However, it’s the kind of fantasy book where you could guess every single thing that’s going to happen in a typical YA fantasy book. It didn’t add anything if you get what I mean. powerless has every popular romantasy trope possible. you may love that and feel fulfilled by that. i do enjoy certain tropes, but relying on tropes leaves a lot of world-building and natural character development to be desired.
