Description

That’s a rather grandiose way of saying that I hope my book suggests to children that we should be kind and show respect. Part B provides lesson information about age/level suitability, lesson objectives, cross-curricular links and links to children’s rights and world-event days. The lesson sets provide a structured plan and clear guidelines for pupils to engage with an authentic piece of children’s literature, a picturebook, in which both the words and the pictures create meaning. Individual differences in primary and lower secondary pupils are especially marked, but picturebooks can be interpreted on many levels and thus satisfy pupils of different ages and at different points in their English language learning. The lessons provide activities which teachers can select according to the age, language level and interests of the pupils in their classes and provide pupils with stimulating activities to develop their critical thinking as well as their English language skills. Participation It’s a No-Money Day is such an important book, and one that I feel passionately should be in every classroom. Teachers set up a safe space in a positive, inclusive classroom climate where all pupils are respected and learn with and from each other. Pupils may encounter social issues for the first time in the classroom which provides a window into the lives of people different to their own or may offer children who are experiencing difficult circumstances the opportunity to understand that they are not alone. It is especially important, therefore, to ensure a learning environment conducive to exploring such topics and to encourage empathy and understanding. Provision

As the UK staggers into a rage-filled general election, well-lunched gasbags will solemnly inform us that this is an election about “getting Brexit done” – while ignoring the cuts, the broken economy and the other causes that helped to drive the Brexit vote of 2016. Dealing with those causes would entail being winched out of the deep embrace of the TV studio sofas, tearing out the IV drip that feeds them the untreated bullshit of No 10 “sources”, and seeing more of the country than could ever be conveyed in a fleeting vox pop. If the experts did that, they would confront a society where levels of deprivation once considered shameful are now treated as normal; where what was scratched together just a few months ago is now relied on as part of the new, ad hoc welfare state. Author Anna Kemp introduces The Hollow Hills, the sequel to her dark magical tale, Into Goblyn Wood.

What if this number increased? Even if it didn’t, a third is far too much. No children should have to be visiting food banks with their families. A moving insight into the sad rise and necessity of foodbanks from the perspective of society's most vulnerable, and an essential book to help develop empathy in younger readers. About This Edition ISBN: Now, Kate Milner has written another powerful picture book about different humanitarian crisis - poverty. The story begins when a young unnamed girl wakes up hungry one morning and all there is for her to eat is a piece of toast, leaving nothing for her mother to have. It is, she explains, a no-money day for her and her mom, which also means it is a no-food-in-the-house day. Although Mum works hard and budgets carefully, today there is no money to buy food. She feels ashamed that she has to rely on donations from strangers, but her daughter likes going to the food bank and chats happily to the kind lady who gives her biscuits and squash. Despite their hardships, the girl is cheerfully optimistic and talks enthusiastically about all the free activities she can enjoy on a no-money day, such as chasing pigeons, reading a scary book from the library, and making a kitten out of mum’s dressing gown.

Exploration of this heart-warming poem shared by The Trussell Trust and written by a food bank user – https://www.trusselltrust.org/2013/05/05/ladys-poem-describes-foodbank-experience/ I read this as part of my annual CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals shortlist reading project. The lessons are informed by a story-based methodology (Ellis and Brewster, 1991; 2014) and a story-based e-methodology for video picturebook read-alouds (Ellis and Gruenbaum, 2023).
