Description

You arrive at the village of Trüberbrook where Dictaphone Entry 02/36 (Arrived at destination...) will automatically record. Walk over to the last building to the right – this door is just past some stairs you will be using soon. Interact with the door in this building to enter the guest house. When you can, walk to the right and through to the next area. You can either simply follow the path off-screen or, once you’re close enough, move the cursor over an area right at the edge of the screen and interact with it to automatically walk there. You start with a familiar dark scene. Walk quite a long way to the left to find 4 of the characters around a partially sunken hexagon. Talk to each in turn; they will fade and the hexagon will rise slightly. Interact with the yellow dish to take a Cheese Skewer. Interact with the orange dish to collect a Worm. Now take the stairs up to your room. After Gretchen fills in some story, she will take action against Lazarus Taft (poor Lazarus!). Take the opportunity to use the Quantum Discriminator on the portal.

The game is billed as a sort of science fiction procedural — think The X-Files or Twin Peaks — with a hefty dose of rural Germany and set during the 1960s. Squint hard enough and it’s the Pacific Northwest or somewhere in Maine. The biggest nod to Germany comes in the all-day buffet of warmed-over appetizers at the local hotel. Both narratively and visually, the game could be set almost anywhere you’d find mountains and pine trees. The PC version of Trüberbrook offers the same controller-based interface as the console versions. It was so buggy, however, that it was essentially unusable. We completed the game with mouse and keyboard. btf/Headup, WhisperGames The very last person is a man dressed as a sailor standing by a streetlight – you can spot him with a wooden leg. Talk to him. The scene will play out, leaving you with a choice. There are achievements linked to either choice but you will be able to get them both on this playthrough. Interact with the Fishing Rod again (it’s on the ground near the boat) to re-collect it, then use the White Towel on the boat. Now use the set of 3 items on Klaus. Once he is down, walk towards Klaus and he will run off into the village. Follow him.Fast forward to daytime, where Gretchen is working on the cable car. You are tasked with returning to the village. While the environments are somewhat generic, they’re rendered with a striking art style. The team behind Trüberbrook has tremendous experience building miniatures, so it chose to blend that skill set with a technique known as photogrammetry. The result is a world that looks tangible and real, but populated entirely by digital characters. I nteract with the window. That won’t work, but now you can use the Coin to unscrew the barred window. With that done, interact with the Ladder once again to climb out of the cell. Look at the picture on the wall directly behind Gretchen’s head – you can see two wires leading to it. Interacting with it reveals a hidden switch. Interact again to turn on the lights.

Once the conversation is over, you will automatically record Dictaphone Entry 19/36 (They took away...). What’s truly remarkable about Trüberbrook is its lighting. Physical sets were photographed in a number of different settings, each one made to simulate a different time of day or season of the year. Light sources come from both off screen and on, and developer btf clearly took its time to explore all the possibilities that miniatures made available to them. Effects include what look to be LEDs embedded inside tiny light fixtures, and flashlight beams playing over simulated cave walls. The way that btf was able to blend this real-world lighting with computer-generated characters is truly remarkable. The result is a game that looks like you could reach out and touch it.Hover over the MÖBIUSPALAST sign over to the right. Use the whistle on it to attract the birds and they will move over to the left a little.
