In 2021, in the adventurous spirit that is Six Dogs, we opened up an office in The Netherlands from where we are looking forward to expanding our reach in Europe and growing the pack of Six Dogs fans on a global scale. DJs specialise in vintage Americana vinyls and records: rock’n’roll, Northern Soul, funk and rockabilly are all in the mix. This hospitality institution and shameless celeb haunt lived at number 30, in various guises, for almost 100 years, and the tiny yet mighty Elena Salvoni ran the floor with abundant old-school dignity.On top of that, the area around the table we were placed at smelled distinctly unpleasant, the downstairs bathrooms reminded me of those in a 2am nightclub, as did the noise levels in the place as a whole. Six by Nico’s hake with coco beans, saffron rouille and bouillabaisse sauce: ‘Overcooked, and the sauce was gelatinous.

The East London Liquor Company occupies the appropriately gritty location of a former glue factory in Bow Wharf, where it produces a 100% British wheat vodka, three London dry-style gins and a just-released London Rye whisky. This is not the only distillery in London (there’s Beefeater and more recently Sipsmith and The London Distillery Company on the Bermondsey Beer Mile, among others) but it is the first in east London for more than 100 years.It also has a new distillery (not yet open to the public) that focuses on other spirits, such as oak-aged absinthe, aquavit and a coffee digestif, which varies according to the beans.

It’s a small distillery that provides delicious tastings and allows you to get familiar with the world of gin-making thanks to their distillery tours.Sixtowns London Dry Gin comes to us from Stoke-on-Trent, a town known for its pottery – and now two brothers, Vitalijs and Alex, are ready to make it known for gin, too. In the very nadir of last winter’s lockdown, Charlotte Street became a name I thought carefully about bringing up whenever I was discussing “the state of where we are” with food industry sorts. Those themed menus so far have featured the likes of “The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party”, “Guilty Pleasures”, “The Orient Express” and, on the week I visited, “Paris”, apparently (next week sees them launch the latest theme, “A Miracle on … ”). My coat, when I put it back on, drunk on the prospect of freedom, had a wet arm where it had been trailing off the back of my chair.

Voted the North London ‘pub of the year’ in 2013, 2015 and 2018, Tapping The Admiral is something of a legend in this neck of the woods. A recent gig at The Black Heart saw performances from Hooded Menace, Witch Sorrow and Colts Blood, which should give you an idea of what you’re getting into.The first distillery to open in north Wales since the early 1900s is still developing its tourism side – a new visitor centre opened last month – but the stunning location on the edge of Snowdonia national park, close to the eponymous waterfall, is hard to beat. Inside, the ceilings are hidden by memorabilia from every GAA and hurling team imaginable, and the conservatory and beer garden make it a perfect place to dodge the tourists walking up Camden High Street. Head Chef, Matt Weston, specialises in home-made pies – which you can get with a pint for 13 quid – and there are regular pub quizzes here too. The one-time favourite haunt of London icon Amy Winehouse, The Hawley Arms also happens to be Secret London’s local boozer. It’s a spectacular spot to enjoy a gourmet dinner while watching the sunset, but it also offers a unique experience that allows you to discover the botanical bounty of the Cape Floral Kingdom.
