These books are also set in time periods that Anne largely ignored, and are unimportant to the overall tale of Pern, in my opinion. It's the perfect spot for readers to get a glimpse of what lies within the pages, helping them decide which book to dive into next. Despite the game taking place in the Seventh Pass, one of the documents in the Weyr Library confusingly refers to a «Lord Torric» who founded a hold on the Southern Continent.

Dragonquest, The White Dragon, Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern and All the Weyrs of Pern were among the five annual finalists for the best novel Hugo Award. In the mid '90s, stringent rules were placed on the creation of new clubs and the governance of existing clubs, resulting in legal action against some fans. D'kor manages to retrieve this from them by getting N'eth to pose as the rider, and then takes the skin to Masterhealer Jazon. S'lon arrives not long afterwards and reveals that N'eth has been abducted — he is blindfolded, but he can hear the tides, leading them to think he is still on Ista Island. The white dragon, though a runt, has some special abilities that will prove to be very important later.

Dragonsong was subtitled "Volume One of The Harper Hall Trilogy" on the front cover of the Bantam Spectra edition, March 1986. Dragonflight was subtitled "Volume I of The Dragonrider of Pern" on its front cover no later than its fourth US printing, June 1974. At Fort Weyr, another meeting is held and S'bor decides to send D'kor to Ista Island — where a majority of sick herdbeasts seem to be coming from — with S'lon and N'eth, leaving B'rak at Fort Hold. Various side-plots are developed throughout the game including a bit of intrigue involving an epidemic sickness that is somewhat reminiscent of the storyline in McCaffrey's novel Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern.Moreta is mentioned in songs and legends in the original trilogy, and this book gives us more information on this compelling character. The Harper trilogy is one I only recently read for the first time, and as they were so fresh in my mind I omitted them from my chronological reread. The speed of this change to Pern society almost, but not quite, strains the limits of plausibility to me as a reader.
