I have not addressed the fate of trans men to the same extent, only as far as suggesting they do not suffer from the toxin but may hide their true male identity for fear of reprisals. The characters are very well written and I can say that, not only did I thoroughly enjoyed this read, I also repratedly sacrificed sleep to find out what would happen next. I have read several pieces of pandemic fiction that have a similar premise with a virus that causes individuals to become violent. Before I start, if you get a chance to listen to the audiobook, do so as Juanita McMahon does an incredible job with the various voices, young and old. The themes explored in Moths are extremely relevant such as sexism and freedom, but unlike books such as The Handmaid's Tale, the boot is on the other foot.

On our site, you can find not only book reviews but author interviews, cover reveals, excerpts from books, acquisition announcements, guest posts by your favourite authors, and so much more. The women Mary work with have never known what it’s like to walk down a street clutching a set of car keys like a weapon, or fall pregnant by accident. When writing the future timeline, it turned out that getting rid of the patriarchy is harder than just killing off the majority of men and locking the rest up in facilities and sanatoriums. Alone in a new city, he seeks solace in a strange cafe run by a surly ex-sumo wrestler and soon becomes enamoured with the alluring waitress Neotnia. Moths explores male violence against women, homo-normativity, and gynocracy, and is described by the publisher as “a powerful assessment of life through the lens of a main character in her 70s”.

The book unearths fascinating ethical questions about personal freedom, the greater good, and hundreds of years of societal patriarchy. Against a backdrop of a digital cold war, fought with deep fakes and cyber attacks, knowing the the truth and finding anything real is a rarity and genius teenage programmer John is on his way to Tokyo to make his fortune, selling his code to a global tech giant.

Our protagonist Mary is, unusually for books of this kind, in her 70s, and remembers the 'time before' the moths decimated the male population which gives her a different outlook to many of the younger women (who you can also sympathise with; after all, they've never known a world where men are equal to women). But now there’s a vaccine - a way that men can leave the facility without dying or suffering from psychosis. You explore some big, and extremely topical, themes: male violence against women, homo-normativity, and gynocracy.

Would you survive the day where half die and the other half could be taken over by a violent rage to kill you at any moment? Also, it’s estimated that women make up less than 20% of engineers in the tech industry - without whom, no Internet network, or mobile phone signal would be possible.

This really is dystopian future at its best, a heartfelt admonition of covetous behavour that is inspiring, and hopeful. It’s decidedly less funny, but beautiful and devastating and was a catalyst for my seventeen-year-old self to start to question the status quo. At one point it's mentioned that the women didn't struggle with cars after the men were infected because. This group is for the discussion and recommendation of paranormal romances and paranormal erotic romance, along with ur Welcome to Paranormal Romance!I also looked at the migratory patterns and distances of butterflies to model the collapse of the world – they can fly an incredible 1,200 to 2,800 miles or more. The spiky hairs and the bright colours – it’s like an instinctive part of me screams don’t touch them!

Publisher, Eleanor Teasdale:“ Moths is utterly, horrifyingly compelling with an older protagonist who has lived through the change in the world. I had to create a world where all men suddenly stop being able to go to work, pretty much overnight. Then… the eggs hatched and an army of hungry caterpillars spread their tiny toxic threads on every breath of wind. Today, we’re super excited to be taking part in Angry Robot’s cover reveal for Jane Hennigan’s MOTHS! It is wonderfully written- pulling on all of the feelings that erupt as you live through a pandemic, without feeling forced, cheesy or overegged. There is one good government official and some scientists though, as it turns out there’s a vaccine that’s been developed, but the MWA are keeping it secret and only giving it to their pet sex slaves. Thank you to all those who have contacted me over the last year to say how much you've enjoyed Moths. It's more common in dystopian novels for women to be the repressed/ inferior sex (Only Ever Yours, The Handmaid's Tale, Future Home of the Living God) so I was really looking forward to exploring this concept.
