Description

With poisonous mushrooms wielding their wrath and a hand-size limit to manage, card selection is a tricky proposition at every turn. Rather than having to collect three normal cards, you can use a night card and a day card to make up the balance. If you believe board game accessibility is important and can support our Patreon you'd be helping make sure the site can continue with this valuable work. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. When you gather a set of three mushrooms of the same kind, you can fry them up – if you have a pan played out in front of you.

Note: One of the crypt cards, Osric Vladislav, was left out of the original Keepers of Tradition print run and is here available for the first time. The game comes in a small, round container with 60 cards, 35 point tokens, and an instructions sheet inside. Fungi, the brain-child of Brent Povis, is a two-player card-based game that revolves around collecting and cooking an array of mushrooms to prosper on a dusky evening in the woods.

This card game is comprised of 86 Forest cards, eight night cards, 18 stick cards, one ‘shoes’ card, overview cards and rules. The set up takes a couple of minutes, and the game is easy to pick up but very challenging as you become more familiar with it. Try not to force your enthusiasm on anyone though because there is a morel way to do these kind of things! Sometimes we may include links to online retailers, from which we might receive a commission if you make a purchase. Yes, not only does this forest have wild pans that are free for the taking, it also apparently grows rich crops of butter and cider.

Selling the mushrooms gives you walking sticks instead, which you use to venture further in the woods: taking cards further away on the draft pool. Coming out on top of the mushroom cooking requires careful consideration in drafting, playing pans, or taking the decay. Depending on which way you put it, you can have your mushroom box look either happy or dead and sad, you decide!

The feet represents the ‘immediate area’ of the forest and the two cards in front of the feet are free for anyone to draw if they want to pick one up. But all games require thought, there is a lil luck but by and large you feel like its your good or bad play that will determin the out come. These are acquired in exactly the same way as your mushrooms, suggesting forcefully you’re stealing stuff directly out of kitchens as you saunter past. Each round involves a player placing one card face-up in front of them; then, all other players must put down the same colour of card as the first player. Should we use your comment as a testimonial and you do not want it to be shown, please CONTACT US and we will remove it.This is perhaps the perfect game for someone with such interests, because it’s also a very small box and doesn’t take up mushroom! Actually, that would be adorable and I’m prepared right now to say that’s exactly what the game is, or at the very least what it absolutely should become. We joked about the niche theme at the start, but it has actually been a big year for fungus board games, with Earth released earlier in 2023. The forest is the centre of play, with cards being collected from the pair of shoes for no cost or collected from deeper recesses in exchange for sticks. Fungi offers a range of different species of mushroom to come across and collect on your jaunt, each type with its own rarity-dependent flavour and sale values.

Some mushrooms are just really easy to gather – common and bland, but available in the quantities needed to all but guarantee they make a set. If you have two or more in a set, you can trade them in for foraging sticks that will let you explore a greater proportion of the forest ahead. The container itself is portable due to its compact size, meaning you can take the fungus-filled fun with you anywhere! It’s also an experience that is curiously detached – it’s algorithmic more than intuitive as you rattle through an internal mental spreadsheet of risk and reward each time you pick up a card. This review came from Tabletop Gaming Magazine, which is home to all of the latest and greatest tabletop goodness. The leaflet is colourful, and each section is distinguished by a different coloured background (all of which are based on the game’s five colours of cards—neat!
