Ultimately, you should budget for a separate sound system to accompany your new TV. A Sonos Beam would be a huge improvement on the C1’s speakers, but an Arc is a more deserving partner if you aren't in a position to go for a full home cinema system. Verdict Having won over home cinema fans with its OLEDs, LG has its sights set on wooing gamers even more than previous models. The C1 has support for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), NVIDIA G-Sync, and AMD FreeSync, as well as ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode). There’s also eARC, for routing sound out of the screen into one of the best soundbars– although bear in mind that the low stand means there's little scope to sit a soundbar in front of the panel without obscuring the screen. Connectivity is accomplished. All four HDMI ports are HDMI 2.1, and support 4K 120Hz (capped at 40Gbps @ 10-bit 4:4:4, for those who follow such specifics), making the set an obvious partner for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. There’s a full suite of AI modes (grouped under the AI service setting), which offer blanket processing improvements regardless. AI Picture Pro crunches video content and applies noise reduction and sharpness in real time, while AI Brightness offers an HDR-style lift to SDR programmes. Similarly, AI Sound Pro uses clever audio processing to lift and separate two channel and 5.1 mixes. A Cinematic Movement option that controls the level of frame merging is particularly effective, and all but eliminates the horrid soap opera effect (if you’re a fan, Smooth is still available).

LG’s AI Picture Pro picture system has had a deep learning performance bump this season which allows it to better optimise and analyse images in real time; it seems HD upscaling is also a beneficiary. The C1 isn’t much of an improvement on its predecessor, but there wasn’t much that needed improving. The picture performance and feature set were already exemplary, and LG has slightly improved the former with its new Cinematic Movement motion processing and enhanced de-contouring feature, and slightly improved the latter with a better menu system and a more complete app selection. The key picture presets here are Standard, Vivid, and Cinema Home. All three impress. There’s also a dedicated Filmmaker Mode, regular Cinema, Eco, plus some ISF settings – Expert (Bright Room) and Expert (Dark Room). The set ships with a newly downsized Magic Remote control, which sits a little easier in the hand. This features dedicated buttons here for Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and Rakuten TV, plus has Google Assistant and Alexa shortcuts.

In addition to the new webOS, LG has also revised its menus, making them aesthetically a little more appealing. LG C1: Verdict Image gradations are effortless, thanks to improvements in dynamic tone mapping. We spotted fewer errant halos around high contrast highlights. Pictures look smoother, almost photographic. You stare into its images, rather than look at them. Weguarantee you won't find the OLED65C14LBcheaper then us here at Electronic World TV, the home of cheap TVs! In terms of sound, AI Sound Enhancement now has height virtualisation. The new Auto Volume Levelling feature is designed to reduce jarring volume differences as you switch between different apps and sources. While the LG C1 isn’t the total no-brainer it once was, it still hits the televisual sweet spot. It’s always tough to try and describe picture quality in overly florid sentences, but the precision you get from this set is a joy to behold. This is the kind of telly that makes you want to watch more telly, which, given the year we’ve all spent indoors, really is saying something. Given how infrequently most folks buy a new TV, I’d also give it the nod over last year’s CX just for the sake of having the most current feature set possible. App happy, again

Dolby Vision IQand Dolby Atmos finish off things perfectly with amazing room filling sound and amazing visuals to bring the cinema experience to your living room. Some will still be disappointed that LG hasn’t gone further with the new C1, and not having done so could prove costly when we compare all of the 2021 TVs for our Awards later in the year. However, right now, it’s one of the best TVs you can buy. For gamers and fast action TV lovers there is the added addition of a 1ms response time coupled with HDMI 2.1 tech with 40-120Hz capabilitywhich means you will never miss a thing and theOLED65C14LBcan cope without any input lag! New this year is NVIDIA G-Sync and AMDFreesync with a detailed Game Optimizer to maximise your playing experience. There are seemingly small, but significant improvements to picture handling too. The set runs the brand’s 4th-gen Alpha 9 image engine, with AI enhanced image processing. It’s astonishingly powerful. Oddly, while the Magic Remote made sense with the old-style webOS, it feels a little at odds with the new full-screen webOS v6.0; the on-screen cursor is an almost redundant affectation.

After their year apart in 2020, LG and Freeview Play have reunited for 2021, which means UK buyers of the C1 and its siblings get access to the full suite of core catch-up apps, including BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4 and My5. These weren’t live when we tested our early sample of the G1, but they are present on the C1. Please note: Item is supplied with minor marks on the surface of the screen / stand. They can be seen on close inspection when the item is off but easily blend in when watching. Please see attached photos for more details*** Unfortunately, Netflix is missing from this aggregation, as it is from many similar systems, and that rather hampers its usefulness. The intelligence of the recommendations is somewhat questionable, too, with shows for kids often being promoted long after most children will be in bed, for example. Of course, a set can only learn so much over our review period and you might find that the quality of the recommendations improves over time. We have now started delivering right to your door! The LG C1 didn't disappoint at launch in any way –and even a year on it's a stellar OLED option to consider. The set’s latency performance is very good for gaming. We measured input lag at 12.6ms (1080/60) with Game mode on. LG C1 review: Sound quality Our only major critique of the LG C1? It’s the same we apply to any TV nowadays: you need to pair it with a soundbar to enjoy audio with anywhere near enough oomph, otherwise you’re basically enjoying a Mr Whippy ice cream without a Flake on top, like some kind of animal. Sheer physics dictates this screen is not able to deliver the sound its visuals deserve. LG OLED65C14LB verdict Standard is the go-to recommendation for most content, and works fine with studio broadcasts and sports coverage, but Vivid, often reviled because of its heavy saturation, is a real crowdpleaser too, particularly with superhero movies that use a denuded colour palette and animations designed to pop.
