polished or smooth surface (e.g. of polished metal or silvered glass) that forms images by reflection. Windows took nearly three years to complete. Did she expect such a simple concept to take that long? An alienating city street gradually becomes a place to call home. Little by little, baby Tracy grows. She and her neighbours begin to rescue their street. Together, children and adults plant grass and trees and bushes in the empty spaces. They paint murals over old graffiti. They stop the cars. Everything begins to blossom. Belonging explores the re-greening of the city: the role of community, the empowerment of people and the significance of children, family and neighbourhood in changing their urban environment. The streets gradually become places for safe children's play, and community activity and places for nature and wonder.' How do the pictures appear to have been made? It isn’t always easy to tell with the different digital applications and printing processes that can be applied but encourage the children to look closely. Do the pictures look as though they are painted, drawn, collaged or created digitally? Refer to the section at the end where Jeannie Baker describes the process by which the images have been created. Use the medium of collage to create a spread depicting part of the children’s daily routine. Share these and notice the similarities as well as differences. As part of work in geography, you may want to choose a child from a different country and create a spread which depicts the same part of their day. Diary writing Choose a picture and make a list of nouns that are used to describe the people, places and objects in the scene.

Baker was the IBBY Australian nominee for the prestigious 2018 Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration.Progressing scenes with a sad message. Upon closely studying each collage I became more and more impressed. I can't begin to know how long each took to construct. Sam, now a young man, gets married, has a child of his own and moves to the country. Now father and baby look through a window in their new home. The view again is of a wilderness, but in a cleared patch of forest across a dirt road a prophetic sign reads, ‘House The AusVELS standard that will be used as part of this learningopportunity is from the ‘exploring and responding’ strand in level 4, and is asfollows; ‘students comment on the exploration, development and presentation oftheir arts works, including the use of specific arts elements and techniques. They identify and describe key features of arts works from their own and othercultures’ (VCAA, 2012). The Think Aloud strategy is used to encourage students to voice their internal thoughts as they read. Reading short units of text cumulatively readers consider what individual words mean and how meanings shift and are firmed up as more information is provided. Students connect reading with their prior knowledge and complex thought processes are made visible. Good teachers model thinking aloud, speculation and problem solving as part of their everyday teaching. The next step is to explicitly show students how they can use this strategy to monitor their own comprehension.A script is useful to prepare to ensure you focus on particular strategies. A think aloud using a wordless picture book will encourage readers to slow down and focus on details. Here is an example below for the second spread: What I will say

The materials and techniques I use vary from one project to another. I enjoy the continual challenges this medium gives me to invent techniques and explore and experiment with materials and their textures. The cyclical nature suggests that the boy and his new family have moved away to start afresh but doubt sets in as the reader is left to wonder whether the process will occur all over again. Not quite sure what the boy was aiming at with the slingshot but I didn’t much like that picture. However, overall, the collage illustrations are outstanding. And there’s a cat! Think of places where this story could be set. Are there any clues in the text to help you choose a location? Draw another view from the same window before the first image in the book and / or after the last image in the book. Use stop-motion animation to show the changing landscape (as seen through a window) over a period of years.
