General-purpose syringes are used in many laboratories and other workplaces for drawing up and expelling liquids or suspensions. They are designed to fit appropriate needles, tubing, syringe filters, or similar devices, and are constructed of plastic, glass, or a combination of both. They may also have metal components. I have recently found myself in a number of discussions regarding what it is actually possible to know about measurement accuracy, especially as it relates to sterile compounding. These discussions have ranged from considerations of the lowest volume a human can measure, to the level of precision necessary in density data for gravimetric systems. Based on those conversations, I have come to the conclusion that we tend to practice as if we were capable of more precision and more accuracy than is, in fact, humanly possible in the general case. Another common way of giving liquid medicines is to use a measuring spoon. These are usually used to measure 5ml amounts. The reality from ISO7886-1, however, is that delivering 9.6 mL from a 10 mL syringe has a ±4% precision, which means that we only know for certain that we delivered somewhere between 9.22 and 9.98 mL of diluent. Presuming the expansion from 9.6 to 10 mL is roughly linear within this narrow range, that means that our resulting volume is somewhere between 9.6 and 10.4 mL, so our concentration is somewhere between 86.5 mg/mL (900 mg/10.4 mL) and 119.8 mg/mL (1,150 mg/9.6 mL). The tip of the syringe is where a needle is sometimes attached. People tapering off psychiatric drugs typically use a slip tip syringe, shown above in the image, always without a needle. Some syringes, such as those used to measure insulin, are marked in numbers of "units" rather than milliliters.My observation is that we tend to treat these objects as if what appears on their labeling (including the measurement scale on the syringe) was completely and quintessentially accurate. The truth is that it may not be. Count the lines on a syringe marked in even-numbered increments. Most syringes include incremental hash marks between larger, numbered ones. Some liquid medicines should be taken with food or milk. Other liquid medicines work best on an empty stomach. There are a few liquid medicines that should not be taken with certain foods, juices or milk. This should be shown on the medicine label. You can’t make a measurement more precise by performing arithmetic on it (you can’t weigh 1000 items on a scale accurate to the nearest gram and produce an accurate weight to the microgram level). However, it remains vital that you obtain aspirate from the nasogastric tube, you test it using pH paper and you obtain a pH of 5.5 or below before you commence feeding via the tube. If you have just placed the tube and you want to use it for water, feeding or medication for the first time follow the procedure for replacing a nasogastric tube. What Are The Parts Of A Syringe?

The image above shows a syringe with a domed plunger tip. The dose is measured by lining up the top ring of the plunger tip with the 5mL calibration marking (where the arrow points).
