The local dimming arrangement on the G70A is rudimentary, but even eight edge-lit zones should be better than none.

The Odyssey G7 S28 does include backlight strobing, but it's hardly worth talking about due to numerous issues. While the IPS panel is decent, it's not the most versatile for content creation due to its more limited wide gamut support. I didn’t find the super deep curve particularly beneficial, nor did it bother me a ton – if I had the choice, I’d definitely choose a shallower 1800R curve, but I’m not that picky. With Auto Source Switch+, your monitor detects when connected devices are turned on and instantly switches to the new source signal. But the biggest issue is simply the visual quality, there's a significant amount of strobe crosstalk which leads to a blurry double image.

The response time average registers in under 5ms, and the level of overshoot is minimal for the majority of transitions. The fast response time keeps up with the 240Hz refresh rate superbly, and I didn’t notice any bad ghosting or other motion artifacts, which can be common on other slower VA panels.Ultimately, I wouldn’t consider it a total deal breaker – especially since variable refresh rate is less crucial at framerates this high, when tearing is hard to see – but knowing how widespread the issue is and how many users it’s affecting does certainly dock some points from Samsung’s favor. On our 32-inch review unit, it was tough to get the top and bottom of the screen to look the same in Lagom’s viewing angle pattern, and the edges never quite lined up, despite the incredibly deep curve. Whether you'd actually notice the difference is an open question, but you'll have the peace of mind knowing that if you're hitting up to 240fps in your favorite game then your monitor is keeping up. Viewing angles are good as expected from an IPS panel, and the fact that it's flat versus the original G7 makes it much easier to view at off angles. Samsung advertises the Odyssey G7 S28 as an HDR monitor, and it has received DisplayHDR 400 certification. As is usual for this section of our reviews, the usual disclaimer applies here about contrast actually being poor overall. There is a good argument that anything over 144Hz is excessive given how little different you'll see in the jump between 144-240Hz, but with the latest graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD powering gaming PCs you can expect many low-demand titles easily smashing past 144fps.

Gaming escapes beyond the screen with CoreSync technology that matches your game's on-screen colours for world-blending immersion. Other issues include Samsung locking overdrive controls when adaptive sync is enabled, and a poor backlight strobing mode. The real kicker for Samsung is advertising it as an HDR monitor, when performance suggests it's a fake HDR display. The chin on this monitor is a little too large, but at least the rest of the bezels are normal in size.
