The first half of this was very difficult to care about because there were so many characters (most of them sadly quite one-dimensional), but the second half was an absolute delight. She has brought me often, and especially on windy days when I am vouchsafed incidental revelations, to the threshold of intense pleasure, and on occasion I have been enabled, kneeling in my little corner here, with the complicity of the laburnum… to cross the threshold. The ambitious career psychiatrist hopes to gain notoriety from his case, and takes her suspicions to the police, hoping to get involved with the case. the group whittles down quickly until only a handful remain, and thankfully these characters are well-developed with fully defined personalities and backstories designed to ignite the reader's sympathies—flawed but likable underdogs with hard-earned survival skills put to good use.The amount of subtle possibilities leaves nothing but wide open space as to who is committing these murders and why. Like many popular young adult authors, White is crossing over into the adult market this year, but her contemporary debut is perhaps one of the furthest from the work we’ve seen from her before. I think it's definitely worth picking up for those wanting a more mystery based version of horror and it kept me turning the pages. The plot itself moves quickly despite the POV switches slowing down the pace, and body count goes up FAST.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER •A high-stakes hide-and-seek competition turns deadly in this“marvelously creepy thrill ride of a book that keeps twisting until the very end” (Karen M.I especially enjoyed her as the voice of Foster and would definitely love to have her continue with the following books in the series. Thank you to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Del Rey and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

But then, the story tapered off as we were introduced to additional points of view of fraternal twins, Bodie who has just been released from a psychiatric hospital and Amelia who uses art to heal from past trauma. jukeboxes, jeans and Eartha Kitt are mentioned, yet the attitudes of the characters suggest earlier times. Through a tip from a psychiatrist, Foster learns about Bodie Morgan: a troubled man with a twisted past and a penchant for pretty young redheads with the bluest eyes. This is a dark and sinister story, punctuated by wonderful dialogue, acutely observed characterisation and some very funny scenes – usually involving the disfunctional Simon.

Due to this, it was not a fun reading experience going back and forth like that with no real rhyme or reason with characters I already forgot about or didn’t know who they were because again, they just weren’t worth remembering.
