It’s a great new musical, but the problem is the vast majority of people want to watch a show made of up songs and stories that come from their own CD and DVD collections. Much of the success of Richard Eyre’s production is based on the same factors. An animatronics pig may be the title lead of Betty Blue Eyes (given the rumoured expense of the pig, it was strangely unanimated, with stellar facial gestures but nothing that a good Jim Henson puppet couldn’t have achieved), but the real leads act Betty off the stage. Some characters I hated with all my guts (if you know, you know 👀). And others I loved with all my heart: first and foremost being Landon, Betty’s dad. be it in the woods or in their house: ( sometimes the story had a childlike fairytale ‘feel’)... but with the devastations - it’s not a child’s book)Bettys Gebbi, auch ein fav Moment, plus in dem Kapitel erfährt man wie alt die Protagonisten sind Wikipedia hat keine Ahnung The opening sex scene between Betty and Zorg is filmed in one long shot: one angle slowly moving closer to their naked bodies, from the initial throes of passion to climax. It is so natural, so intense, and so beautiful. You can almost feel the heat in the air, their sex like a storm brewing. The scene is set to the sounds of a fairground carousel playing a tune tinged with insanity, creepy and foreboding, and unmistakably French. The original French title of this film hints at the oft-mentioned heat in the film - full of sweltering imagery thanks to Jean-François Robin's vivid cinematography - and it also references the body temperature of a pregnant woman. Pregnancy becomes an issue late in the film, but throughout there is the sense of something growing, something brooding, within the story and within its characters - Zorg's gestation of his novels, Betty's scarce ability to contain the energies within her. Bouts of frenzied sex (this is one of those films that briefly caused a scandal as the sex was probably real) seem to provide only temporary relief; what is inside must eventually erupt into the world, and this creates a tension that provides the film with focus even through its more langurous passages, the moments of calm within the storm. Alongside this runs the story of timid chiropodist Gilbert (Reece Shearsmith) and his social-climbing wife Joyce (Sarah Lancashire), who are thwarted in their efforts to get a foothold on the town’s social ladder and decide to steal the pig as an act of revenge (and hunger!).

The Betty of the title is like a shooting star; she runs hot and bright, but she's burning up. _Betty Blue_ chronicles a torrid affair between a waitress and a handyman, initially in a broken down seaside resort. Betty is both passionate and unstable, almost childlike, and initially it is outsiders who bear the brunt of her anger - the piggish owner of the seaside bungalows, for example, or the playboy publisher who rejects Zorg's novel. This book was equally hard to read and magical at the same time. The first thing that swept me away was the writing. It was enchanting and lyricle. Poetic and mesmerising. oh and p.s—whatever landon's “pudding pie” is; this wondrous magic of “multicolored gelatin cubes suspended in pink gelatin,” i want the recipe.* When I was a mere 5% into this book, I fretted about not wanting it to end. This book is THAT good. The characters are living, breathing, loving, and endearing. They go through the darkest and most unsettling of times, and I was with them for every bit of this journey I never wanted to end.

Betty Blue is venerated on campuses for its anti-establishment, free-spirited, all-you-need-is-love-provided-the-bitch-is-hot stance: the film is a hotbed of classic French passion and anarchic comedy. The novel however, is more in your Bukowski-Miller vein, with its likeable tossbag narrator and occasional moments of hideous self-aggrandisement. Framing the rough-edged,troubled alienated youth (a major theme of the movement) of Betty and Zorg, Beineix closes in on the couple in long gliding panning shots, stopping on Betty and Zorg being naked, both physically and mentally. The pain lies in imagining the long and happy life they might have had together, but for this thing that mad people have, whatever it is, gnawing away inside her mind. No explanation is attempted of why she was the way she was, no revelation of some childhood trauma or of some past bitter experience. We are left to assume that she had some brain or genetic defect. Nor are we given any psychiatric diagnoses. It is mentioned at one point that she is neurotic, but then aren't we all? She mentions hearing voices in her head which is the classic symptom of Schizophrenia, but her other behaviour doesn't fit the pattern. Nor does her behaviour fit the pattern of the Manic- depressive. who, surely, is subject only to mood-swings not to sudden and violently wild outburst of behaviour. So we are left to ponder the nature of madness. It makes you think and it's all interesting stuff. Images and music fitting together to form a perfect marriage. Fantastic and moving.
