Having spent ten years organising road haulage runs all over England, I totally empathise with the massive task Adam Swann set himself and I have to say, it takes someone of that character to tackle the job today. I read a few smaller books in between, but I just adored spending so much time in Victorian England. I thought their wedding night was very well written: Henrietta naive but determined, and both of them pleasantly surprised.

Maybe after Daniel starts taking a bottle and his grandparents steal him for a weekend I’ll try this book again. As now, the secret of Swann's success is building an efficient and competitive business that is ahead of its time and is essential to the success of others. H. has known kiddo since he was in elementary school, as he was the director of our favorite summer camp. There was a small boy in the street and Sam went out of his way to hit the boy over the head, killing him. While the business is essentially a family one, much of its success is due to finding the right staff in the right place and giving them every incentive to perform and develop the business. I seldom select a “series” of books, I usually prefer my stories in one sweet volume, however, I am feeling a nice bit of satisfaction knowing that I have not closed the final page on Adam and company. Adam Swann, a 31-year-old cavalryman in the service of Queen Victoria’s army, decides to break off with his family’s military tradition and gives up his soldierly life in lieu of starting anew in England as a businessman. Adam arrived in town at the time of the riot and watched as Sam, Matthew and his son Makepeace Goldthorpe (the man Henrietta was to marry) rode into town. The whole Swann on Wheels business makes for a great story, but in the end, I'm rather a typical woman (ha! This book is about 30-something Adam Swann who breaks with family tradition to leave the British army and go into business in 1860s England. At some points I wondered where it was going - there’s not much predictability in the sudden turns a man’s life can take - but overall there was momentum and motion and purpose, and satisfying change in the characters. In his struggles to become a respectable and successful owner of a horse-carriage business, he has a few supporters, including his young wife, Henrietta and, surprisingly, his own father. Henrietta had ended up hitting him in the head with a rock and kicking him in his privates to escape.
