For me, it goes in cycles. I’m constantly changing where I think I’m going to end up. I think it has to be like that because technology is constantly changing. We can’t be as arrogant as we have been up until this point – knowing computer science doesn’t mean you know the scenarios that it’s being applied in. This isn’t just deterministic, in a vacuum, this is affecting real lives. It’s important for computer scientists to be wise about the roll-out of these technologies, rather than getting caught up in the technology and excitement of being a computer scientist. What are the decisions we can make today to make sure we leave a legacy we are proud of tomorrow? You have a unique and aspirational story. Do you ever get moments of self-doubt?

I’m a doer but I’m not the type of person that puts pressure on myself to be the first or the best. That’s not really the way I live my life. My motivations have obviously changed as I’ve gotten older, but really, I’m just here for a good time. Some might assume you were put under pressure from people around you growing up. It’s interesting to hear you say you were just following what you were good at… In July 2022, Rolling Stone ranked Ctrl at number 28 on its list of "100 Best Debut Albums of All Time", claiming that "she came out looking like a hero." [65] Accolades [ edit ] Year-end lists It was my love for creativity that made me go into it. Whether it was playing with databases, which I was fascinated with from the age of ten, or typing stories on my dad’s computer at the age of four, my motivation for going into STEM was about exploration, learning and understanding. There was a keynote at the conference and this woman explained how in the US, the number of women engaging in tech had been in freefall over the last decade. I did more research into it and realised this has implications for us economically, ethically, politically and societally. I wanted to do something about it for my unborn children – if I ever have daughters, I want them to know STEM is an option for them.

How do you deal with failure and adversity?

Our eyes are now open to the dangerous fact that our technology is built by a series of big decisions made by a small number of people, mainly men. It means our technology is derived from the gender, nationality and beliefs of a section of society whose lived experience may not chime with your own. The tech world might feel beyond reach, particularly if you're a woman. a b "SZA Shares A New Video For "Love Galore," Featuring Travis Scott". The Fader. April 27, 2017 . Retrieved June 20, 2017. An inspirational exploration of why women are under-represented in tech, why it matters, and what we can do about it. Whether it’s the future of work, whether it’s diversity, history – people are saying, ‘Wow, I didn’t know any of that.’ I was getting frustrated that so many of the problems that we’re trying to deal with in this space come from the fact that a lot of folks don’t have an appreciation. These conversations aren’t part of our social norms. So, I wanted to boil all that down into a book because I can enable people to engage with this, understand it, make practical changes in the Getting Started sections. If I can share what I know with others, that might have an impact not just on those folks attending events, but parents, would-be volunteers . . . That was the impetus behind the book.

ARIA End of Year Urban Albums 2017". Australian Recording Industry Association . Retrieved January 8, 2018.In the UK, women comprise only a quarter of the STEM workforce, leaving a small group of prominent men to make critical decisions about our future. But why does this matter, and what can we do about it?
