The first bit I read was still a bit too ‘Then we jumped out the helicopters and we’re all hard as nails. Heck, even an admission that he was a horrible father or an absent one because of his career and/or PTSD would have made the reader sympathetic.

If you show your team respect and listen to them then they’ll have respect for you, and it makes your life as a leader easier – you don’t have to scream and shout. But the process can be challenging and destabilizing, as I found out during the aftershocks of my departure from the military.

The guys and girls who are in it, have their specific tasks, and sometimes it’s about going, “let’s slow down, come in. This is not an easy read, but in my opinion is essential for anybody going through, or knows someone going through any sort of mental health issue. Jason Fox talks to intrepid travellers, adventurers and heroes about their incredible experiences and howthey found mental and physical resilience.

I listened to this on audio and it was really interesting to hear about how Foxy struggled with his mental health and came to terms with it after being in denial over it for so long. It appears there are a few women in this book who have been damage limitation as a result of his life in the SAS. You have the luxury of observing and seeing what’s going on, and can hear bits from each individual person. If you are interested in Jason Fox himself or just want to build on your own inner strength no matter what life is throwing at you, then pick this book up!If something’s not going to be helping to achieve that, deal with it but not in a confrontational way. But, in fairly typical style, once he found some answers through therapy, Jason turned those experiences to his advantage in supporting others – and his openness in speaking about mental health issues in the forces and after. Whatever our screw-ups, it never hurts to take a look in the mirror and ask the question: How did I fuck that up? As a combat veteran, as a senior team leader in the SBS, I’d been in that situation God knows how many times before, but this one, I was petrified. We’re going to learn from it and we’re going to go on and we’re going to become a better group of people.

We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. I felt very emotional whilst reading Battle Scars and often found it hard to read because of the emotional side of it. What’s also been surprising is what I’ve learned from the experience – not to judge people, to give people another chance. She has investigated the illicit rhino horn trade, capturing the stories of those with boots on the frontline fighting the poaching war, and tracked the most elusive and endangered species on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica, a place known as the most biodiversity intense location in the planet.

Recounting stories of the military operations and expeditions that have tested his own resolve, in Life Under Fire he shares the tools he's developed at the cutting edge of an elite military career and shows how you, too, can build the resilience and inner strength to overcome whatever challenges life puts in front of you.

You’ve got all these great people working for you, but it hasn’t gone quite right, so a load of people get sacked. Upon leaving the forces Jason moved into the corporate world, first working as a project manager and then in security and close protection, before taking his military experience into the film and TV industry. It’s nothing like as tough as I was used to in the Special Forces, but we are still working 24-hour days in extreme environments, pulling together, challenging ourselves. For example, following on from a failed relationship, it’s sometimes vital we take a long look at our character flaws or our behaviour. He moved into television where, as a star of Channel 4’s SAS: Who Dares Wins, he immediately opened up on camera – the show increasingly explores contestants’ emotional issues. After a long period of further destabilisation, with the help of various significant contacts the author eventually accessed the help he needed and his long and painful road to recovery could at last begin. I hadn’t considered the drastic changes to my identity and day-to-day routines because I was scared to acknowledge them.
