I will note, I have not read any other books in this series. Maybe I'd have enjoyed the stuff about the Kingdoms and Odd Sisters and all that more if I'd read the other books. Regarding the story, I liked it a great deal - I thought James was a really interesting character and his descent into Captain Hook proved more interesting than I imagined. I hated the fact that Circe warned him not to go to Neverland and yet he still chose to do so. It's unfortunate what happened to him there, but he did get warned! No one ever warned Lady Tremaine! (or so I remember, correct me if I'm wrong). Can you sense I'm still a bit bitter about Lady Tremaine's fate haha?
