Description

Chocolate Peppermint Crisps combine refreshing bursts of peppermint crunch with silky dark chocolate to deliver a perfect after dinner mint. Peppermint Crisp is a milk chocolate bar filled with a multitude of thin cylinders of mint-flavoured 'cracknel' (which is a brittle crystalline/sugar concoction extruded in fine hollow tubes). She is a popular speaker on food photography and writing has also contributed articles, recipes and photos to a number of online and print publications. Milk Tart is a traditional South African tea-time favourite, very similar to an English custard tart. The package insert featured the recipe for this simple and foolproof dessert starring another truly South African ingredient – the Peppermint Crisp chocolate bar.

I love an easy traybake and this no bake peppermint slice is one of my most requested and most loved recipes. You can substitute double or whipping cream for Orley Whip, but the outcome may be even richer than this pudding already is. Whip the Orley Whip and then add the caramelised condensed milk, castor sugar and peppermint essence.Note - sometimes your caramel will not cooperate and there will still be small pieces of harder caramel after mixing - this is fine. As in its native South Africa, the popular chocolate bar is also used as a crushed topping on pavlova cakes or other cakes in Australia and New Zealand. Gently fold the caramel and grated chocolate into the whipped cream, to keep the mixture as light and airy as possible.

An important aspect of this dessert is that it is left in the fridge for approximately six hours to set. In a large microwave safe bowl, combine peppermint filled chocolate (180g - broken into squares), salted butter (100g) and condensed milk (100g) and melt in 30 second bursts in the microwave.Always thought this tart to be one of the most disgustingly sweet, delicious, decadent tarts out there. For more fun, fold some peppermint chocolate into the whipped dough mixture for extra texture and goodness.

This is easily done by running a knife under hot water then drying it off and using this to cut the bars. Nestlé South Africa also sells an ice cream containing Peppermint Crisp shards, as well as a Peppermint Crisp dessert topping. And this year we treated them to not one but TWO South African delicacies: chicken sundowners (will be blogged in a later post, I promise) and Peppermint Crisp fridge tart. I just had to comment on this, I am a Saffer recently moved to Sydney from London and just the mention of Tennis biscuits has me salivating! Even though this peppermint slice is no-bake, we still need to grease and line the baking tin/pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhanging on each side.According to Nestle’s head of public relations, Zweli Mnisi, Peppermint Crisp is more than 50 years old. I made some just a few weeks ago, but mine was pretty much just a pack of tennis biscuits, 250ml cream (whipped), the caramel condensed milk and a peppermint crisp.

Don't worry if they break a bit, just fit the pieces back together like a choc mint jigsaw puzzle on top of the base - the melted chocolate we put over the top will cement it all in place! I found the baking parchment easier to work with when wrapped around a chopping board and secured underneath with a piece of tape. With peppermint chocolate along with peppermint Aero bars, this is a fun and easy melt and mix recipe that the whole family will love! For the Peppermint Crisp, what you are after ideally is a combination of chocolate and crispy mint candy, in an approximately 50/50 ratio – which is surprisingly hard to come by outside of a Peppermint Crisp wrapper!
