Description

As for the fight between the RT-AX86U vs the RT-AX86U Pro, the “Pro” notion of the latter is a bit arbitrary. There’s not much extra to qualify the new hardware for the moniker. But that’s just semantics. Chances are the two are the same in real-world usage, and I wouldn’t consider the Pro if it costs noticeably more. IoT Network: A secondary also isolated Wi-Fi network for IoT devices. Technically, this is just another guest Wi-Fi network like the one above. I’ve received many questions about the RT-AX86U vs RT-AX86S and then about the RT-AX86U vs RT-AX86U Pro. Initially, folks seem to want me to say that the first pair is the same, possibly so they’d feel better getting the S due to availability or cost difference. And with the second pair, many were confused — rightfully so. Subsequently, Asus released the RT-AC3100, which shares the same Wi-Fi specs but has four fewer LAN ports. Since the RT-AC88U is an AC3100 router, folks were confused between the two at the time — and probably still are today.

However, I think there is some information that has been overlooked in previous replies. The two routers differ in their 2.4Ghz networking - the AX86U is 3x3 and therefore can support 3 concurrent spatial streams, whereas the AX88U is 4x4 and therefore supports 4 concurrent spatial streams. My network is 2.4Ghz heavy due to IoT devices and therefore I prefer the better 2.4Ghz capacity for concurrent client connections. So my question is, first, do you recommend upgrading to WiFi6 (is it going to give me improvement in connection quality assuming most of my clients are still WiFi5?) and if yes, which one of those would you recommend? Reply Would one or two more RT-AX86S do the job or would RT-AX86U Pro be better for main router? Also I imagine the current extender would do just fine in the basement for now? When connected to my GT-AX6000 something is not allowing certain apps or functions to work on our phones and I need help how to troubleshoot

Not just for gamers - Asus’ latest Wi-Fi 6 router is an impressive all-round upgrade

Avoid the initial major release (*): This is the first firmware version of a model where the 3xx number changes, such as from 384 to 386 or from 386 to 388. Generally, the latest minor update of the previous major firmware release is always the most stable. The Asus RT-AX88U Pro features VLAN and Guest Network Pro, currently available only with the Beta firmware.

While its price tag keeps it from being considered as a budget-conscious wireless router, it turned in very good scores on our close range throughout performance tests. However, the more expensive and current Editors’ Choice winner in both the Wi-Fi 6 router and gaming router categories, the TP-Link Archer AX11000, is a better all-around performer and provides more ports as well as more robust gaming controls. Design and Features The results in my testing, so far … the rt-ax86u pro is a solid router that works very well with my rt-ax82u in mesh. No resets, everything is communicating well, and both the app and web gui work flawlessly. Post 48 hours … Zero issues. Other ASUS routers that will eventually support VLAN on the LAN side include: GT-AX11000 Pro, GT-AX6000, ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000, RT-AX88U Pro, ZenWiFi Pro ET12, ZenWIFI Pro XT1 So to test its Multi-Gig connection using its two 2.5GbE ports (WAN + LAN), I used a double NAT setup via another 10Gbps router, and the router did quite well, producing a sustained rate of over 2000Mbps. (A port has to deal with more overhead when working as a WAN port than a LAN.) Asus RT AX88U Pro: Wired performance of the Multi-Gig ports The 86u pro experienced none of the issues seen with the 88u pro. Kind of disappointing. The only positive thing I can say .. The 88u pro did show a slightly faster wired/ethernet DL speed, but not worth the aggravation and other issues I experienced. The ARP response issue has been resolved, along with the connection issue between the router and the ROG Phone 6 and 7. VLAN capability on the LAN side was added with the release of Firmware: 9.0.0.6.102.3506 (Beta Version) NAT Passthrough : PPTP Pass-Through, L2TP Pass-Through, IPSec Pass-Through, RTSP Pass-Through, H.323 Pass-Through, PPPoE relay A firmware version that starts with 9.x.x.x instead of 3.x.x.x is a beta release meant for testing purposes only.) The major release (3 digits) and minor update (5 digits) in an Asus router firmware version. Thank you for sharing your view of the RT-AX88U Pro. Want to share some context before I ask a few questions.

RT-AX86S vs RT-AX86U vs RT-AX86U pro: Odd Variants Asus RT-AX86S vs RT-AX86U vs RT-AX86U pro: Odd Variants

This post will help with those questions. The gist is if pricing is the same, then there’s no reason not to get the Pro version. And The RT-AX86S can be a good choice for a non-demanding home. I don’t have a gig or more internet connection (it is 200Mbit on optical at the moment and it works fast enough for now). Asus RT-AX86S vs RT-AX86U vs RT-AX86U Pro: Identical-looking, but one is an (almost) entirely different router

From the appearance, the RT-AX88U Pro is the non-Pro version with a different set of network ports. Best-practices for replacing ASUS RT-AX86U with ASUS RT-AX86U Pro (=moving everything from the existing router to a replacement one)? The Asus RT-AX86U Pro boasts Ethernet LAN support, enabling wired connections for devices requiring a more stable and reliable connection. Its compact design makes it suitable for desktop use, ensuring it doesn't take up excessive space.

Also, I noticed a significant lag with my Ring cameras with the 88u pro compared to the 86u pro. The 86u pro opened my cameras instantaneously. The 88u pro needed to think about it before eventually connecting. The RT-AX86U delivered very good throughput on our 2.4GHz close proximity (same room) performance tests. It’s score of 137Mbps was faster than both the TP-Link AX11000 (133Mbps) and the Linksys MR9600 (111Mbps) but just a tad slower than the Asus RT-AX88U (144Mbps). However, it did not fare so well on our long range test: its score of 38Mbps was 29Mbps and 21Mbps slower than the AX11000 and the RT-AX88U, respectively. The part before that -- 3.0.0.4 in the screenshot -- is the Linux kernel version that will also change, albeit much less frequently. It's even more significant and should also be taken into consideration. Be noted: This is an early stage beta, there might be bugs. This version can be downgraded via web GUI only. It shares all common features and settings collectively available in Asus Wi-Fi routers, as I detailed in this primer post. It's similar to any Dual-band Asus Wi-Fi 6 router, including the non-Pro version or the GT-AX6000.Fixed null pointer dereference vulnerabilities. Thanks to Chengfeng Ye, Prism Research Group - cse hkust contribution. In fact, the new Pro router has everything you'd expect in a top-tier ROG Rapture router, save for the bling -- there's no Aura light. And that includes a built-in client for WTFast gaming private network, which is normally only available in top-tier gaming routers, such as the GT-AX11000. The Asus RT-AX88U Pro, running an official firmware as pictured here, includes all gaming features available in Asus gaming routers. I detailed their similarities in this post on Asus Wi-Fi broadcasters, but here are some highlights of these three:
