Any issues with the book list you are seeing? Or is there an author or series we don’t have? Let me know! Overall, Dark Rooms was a weaker Tennison novel from Lynda La Plante, and one that does not really stand out when compared to some of the more impressive books in the series. While I am little critical of it, Dark Rooms did have its interesting and powerful moments, and is still worth a read, especially for established fans of the series. I am hoping that the next book in the series, Taste of Blood, has a better story behind it, and I am still intrigued to see how this series continues.

Laced with gothic undertones in the centrepiece of the decaying Victorian mansion and the horrors hiding within, once home to an eccentric family with a long history of tragedy, this is a tightly plotted police procedural featuring realistic forensic science of the time period, and even a touch of romance for Jane, as well as trips to the coast and as far as Australia, exploring some dark and disturbing themes and complex characters through every navigation of the twisting plot. Throughout the series, discrimination - and specifically misogyny - within the police has been a running theme, once more explored in this novel alongside other abuses of power and the elusiveness of long-buried secrets. Helena Lanark is an elderly woman, living in a luxurious care home. The heiress of an immense family fortune, she keeps the secret to the horror which once occurred within the Lanark family house. Also, new - renovation porn. I doubt though it can turn out well without some general idea, it sounds a bit all over the place.Jane Tennison is leading a murder investigation into the recent brutal death of a young girl, her decomposed starved body discovered in an old air raid shelter in the garden of the Lanark's now derelict house. Initially the focus is on identifying the victim, until another body is found, hidden in the walls of the shelter. The elderly Helena Lanark now lives in a luxurious care home. She is the heiress of an immense family fortune and holds on to a dark secret of the horror which once occurred within the Lanark family house. Lynda has received a huge amount of awards over her time in the field, including becoming an honorary-member of both the Liverpool John Moores University and British Film Institute. She was also awarded with the Dennis-Potter Writers-Award from the British-Academy of Film and Television Arts, and she received the Edgar-Allan Poe Writer’s Award (not to mention an Emmy) for her mini-series Prime Suspect. listening to Lynda de plant spoils me for any other audio thriller(, please can we have more sir!!) I think Lynda la Plante is much better on tv than in print! What a poorly written book; I’ve never thought the word bland would describe a novel but somehow it does for this effort. I love mysteries, crime novels, and stories of this sort, but this was really a disappointing read. My first book from Lynda, I enjoyed her writing style this is a classic police procedural. There is an insta love element in here it was overdone in my opinion and not necessary in the book it really didnt add any value. This book is #8 in the series, I would be keen to go to the beginning to read these books and the other cases out main character worked on where mentioned in this book and i was intrigued. However, and believe me I hate to leave a negative review, but wow; there was very little I enjoyed of this book. Just love your books, Lynda. Just finished unholy murder and am just about to start Judas Horse. You are a truly amazing writer in the thriller genre. ReplyI always devour books by Lynda La Plante and 'Dark Rooms' was no exception. As well as the core investigation per novel, this series is as much about Jane's life and career. Lynda has teased both ninth and tenth books, which may bring the series full circle as we approach 'Prime Suspect'. I love this series and always enjoy the evolution of Jane's character - it was very exciting to see her once again take a step forward in career with her promotion. I cannot wait to see what is next in store for DI Tennison. I love every single one of the book she has written. The one I have enjoyed the most is the Anna Travis serious. Will there be anymore or that is it. Would love to see Anna’s progress in the police force and her relationship with the DCI. Reply Lynda la plante is one of my favourite authors, I have read so many books by her, all of which I’ve loved. I have on my audio books 174 titles, and I wish I could say they were all hers, but sadly not all available. Could you please endeavour to put all her books on audio…I have just finished the govener book 1, and I can’t find book 2. ..Tennison travels to Australia as the investigation and search for answers intensifies, there she discovers the dark secret, that the Lanark family has kept hidden for decades. This secret could bring down the family dynasty as well as putting Tennison’s life in danger. Full of mystery added with family drama and some romance tossed in to make it a great read. This is a classic police procedural and is book eight in the Tennison series. This is my first Lynda La Plante book and can be easily read as a standalone novel. I enjoyed the read and I'm looking forward to reading more about DI Tennison. I have mixed thoughts on this book. I didn’t dislike it but I definitely didn’t enjoy it. The suspect plot line felt so all over the place and the romance subplot was questionable at best. Personally, i felt there was a lot of useless information about the house renovation, I get having sub plots but man, that was boring. Then Jane’s partner Eddie was weird. I had no idea what he actually looked like as it was never said so I had to make something up in my head - felt very strange - and he just didn’t seem like a good bloke for someone who’s a good detective - I mean, read the red flags!

None of it made sense, there were too many characters that appeared out of the blue and then seemingly never existed (where did tim go?) and by the end i’d practically forgotten what had happened at the beginning for them to even end up there. Her first TV series as a scriptwriter was the six part robbery series Widows, in 1983, in which the widows of four armed robbers carry out a heist planned by their deceased husbands.

All the misogynistic horrors, sexual harassment in the workplace and tropes of the 1970s are there amid a rather bizarre plot of not just dark rooms but dark "family secrets" and dark discoveries. If I was to be completely objective, I would say that this was deeply flawed. What new DI shares details of a delicate case with family and friends? However I wallowed in the retro on every level and enjoyed my wallow as much as Jane Tennison enjoys a bath. During reading I did some googling as I was trying to understand the period it was set, and found this was a tv series starring Helen Mirren years ago! I hope it was better than this book and that played the Jane character in a better way than she was portrayed here.
