Maybe mixed media novels just aren’t really for me - I find the concept fun, but I do need to really connect with characters to love a book and this narrative style sometimes feels too distanced for me. The mystery may not have been any different from your average murder mystery, but The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels sets itself apart from the typical fashion by presenting the storyline in a unique fashion that was both intriguing and enticing and compelling enough for me to give it a chance.

Hallett is a good read for the puzzles - but as I am not really a puzzle person, she is simply not a good fit for me! His anger with the situation occasionally comes across as a bit of a blunt object – “Kolkata, where I was born, is somewhere under the Bay of Bengal these days… Just don’t get me started on how the world failed to meet its net zero targets,” Brodie is told by his pathologist colleague Sita Roy at one point – but then again, perhaps it needs to. THE NEW MYSTERY PHENOMENON FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE APPEAL AND THE TWYFORD CODE *** 'The queen of tricksy crime' - SUNDAY TIMES 'Her best so far' - MARIAN KEYES 'An astonishing piece of work' - IAN MOORE Open the safe deposit box.Gabriel, their charismatic leader had convinced them that they were angels in human form and the child was the Antichrist. The middle of this novel lags as the investigation trudges slowly forward, but once the truth is revealed, Hallett shocks readers with satisfying twists and a dark, unpredictable ending. And Meg, who wakes up in a snowsuit, stuck in an unmoving cable car while the storm rages around her, a dead body beside her. But there are forces at play that don’t want them to succeed and people who would go to any length to make sure that the secrets surrounding the case stay buried. To celebrate her latest book in style, I'm thrilled to be part of the official blog tour, where I was challenged to turn my hand to writing my review in a different format, so here goes.

It feels interactive, with readers invited to solve the mystery alongside the brilliantly tenacious protagonist. Indeed, the novel does double duty as a survival manual, packed full of good advice—for instance, try not to get wounded, for “injury turns you from a giver to a taker. It gets increasingly dramatic and startling with some of the discoveries with an ending that is maybe unsurprisingly given what we learn though I love the ultimate dilemma! Her agent suggests that she tackle the Alperton Angels case because, given that the relevant events took place 18 years previously, the baby will now be an adult who can be interviewed about their perspective. It’s harder than they could ever imagine as weird anomalies and discrepancies occur, there are numerous smokescreens, blind alleys and red herrings with the truth being beyond their wildest dreams.

It’s an unconventional way to approach a crime novel, but hopefully readers are getting used to my style now.In Ellie’s seemingly superfluous asides – which naturally repay attention – there are echoes of The Appeal’s wonderful central creation, the slippery Isabel Beck.
