Description

Taylor Fladgate blends its magnificent 20 year old tawny Ports from its extensive reserves of old cask aged Ports matured in the firm’s cool and tranquil cellars (known as ‘lodges’) in Oporto on Portugal’s Atlantic coast. Traditionally made with foot-trodden grapes in Noval’s old granite lagares in the summer of 2018, this port is dense, rich and velvety, with leather, liquorish and damsons. You’ll know the name of Graham’s – they’ve been making port since 1820 – but you might not know much about white port, which is made exclusively from white grapes and is actually nearer a golden colour. If you open it up among a group of friends, we would be impressed if the bottle lasts until the end of the night – this stuff is seriously moreish. Opulent and voluptuous nose of complex spicy, jammy and nutty aromas, hints of orange flower and a fine oakiness coming from the long period of aging in cask.

Crusted Port – A blend of outstanding young ports from two or three harvests, these are left to mature in the bottle, forming a “crust” (natural sediment) as they age. The best ruby ports (crusted and vintage) will age for many years and should be decanted before serving. Taylor's Port offers a wide range of port wines, including a variety of styles and vintages to suit different preferences and occasions. Port is a fortified wine produced in the Duoro Valley, in the northern provinces of Portugal – one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world. A blend of black grape varieties is often used, with Touriga Nacional recognised as an important variety. This rare style of port hasn’t been filtrated, hence the wine forming a “crust” in the bottle, and is only made by a limited number of producers.

In fact, the best port – which is produced exclusively in the Douro Valley of Portugal – is the drink of the moment and it’s increasingly being enjoyed as a long drink, as well as the more traditional digestif. We love the toffee/vanilla orange rind nose; the attack is opulent and complex offering up spicy, nutty, fiery, tea flavours with a delicious mellow vanilla finish. In the 20 Year Old tawny, the fruit has mellowed further than in the 10 Year Old, and the spicy, nutty aromas of ageing are more powerful and intense. These cookies are needed for essential functions such as signing in, storing products in your trolley and making payments. Ruby Port – Aged for 2-3 years in barrels or vats, these are full-bodied ports that are meant to be drunk young.

You can get all kinds, including white port (made from white grapes), each with different characteristics.Known for its exceptional quality and distinct character, Taylors Port has a rich legacy that spans generations and has made it a beloved choice among wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike. It was all that and a bag of chips, but over a couple of day it also demonstrated far more elegance. There are two main styles of port: ruby (aged mainly in the bottle) and tawny (aged for many years in oak casks). Aged for a bit longer, they offer more sophistication and complexity but have the same deep red colouring and fruity flavours.

Single Quinta Vintage Port – These ports are produced from a port house’s best vineyards in a great year, but may not be quite good enough for a declared Vintage Port. With often only half the alcohol content of vodka or gin, you’ll find a growing number of bar lists featuring port in all sorts of ways you had probably never imagined. Some properties have 'field blends', where their long history means that each vineyard has a range of different varieties. Not too sweet, not too oaky, this is a fine example of a characterful port that’s a great crowd pleaser – and all the more so if you have eco-warriors at your dinner table.
