Photo: Alan Cleaver The Wainwrights The Wainwrights are the 214 Lakeland Fells that were given separate chapters in the famous seven Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells by A Wainwright. In 2014, it was agreed that the Society should however embark on a project to acquire a copy of every one of AW’s published items, the purpose of which was to try to ensure that a copy of his work was available for the future. We were not interested in which edition or impression was involved although the aim was to acquire a copy which was un-amended from his original publication. Publications ‘about AW’ were not included. However, where there was other material to which he had contributed in some way (e.g. a foreword, an introduction, or the inclusion of drawings which had not been reproduced in his other publications) we included these in our project. The intention was to donate the collection to the Cumbria Archive where it could be inspected and also used for research work. The Wainwright Society – All Rights Reserved. Wainwright Log Book: A Hill Walking Journal to Record All 214

The publication list below covers the items in the project and is believed to be a complete bibliography as well as some other relevant publications which include original material by AW. If we have missed any please let us know! After deciding the spelling mistake on the front cover wasn’t an issue in the grand scheme of things I decided to keep the book! Alfred Wainwright is probably best known for his Guidebooks but, when the total bibliography is inspected, his writing and, particularly his drawings are seen to be of at least equal importance. His reputation and the popularity of his work has of course led to numerous other books which are based on his achievements and story. The Society has never set out to be a ‘collector’ of his books or memorabilia; it is not in our constitution. Where we have had the opportunity to acquire items which are in themselves unique and contain original material we have, on a very selective basis, tried to do so and, where successful, donated these to the Cumbria Archive to enable future generations to be able to see them. Map of Westmorland 1974 by Alfred Wainwright and Paul N. Wilson; (insert in Wain In Lakeland above) Wainwrights Log Book is a must-have for every hiker and Wainwright bagger who's trying to attempt all 214 Wainwrights and challenging himself/herself to reach the whole collection of Wainwright peaks.
