Keep in mind that showing a child is easier than just telling a child. Crochet takes a lot of visuals, especially with young children. Show the child what a hook and yarn is and then show them a finished crochet pattern so they can see how two simple products can create a beautiful masterpiece. Adapt! You may always use an inline crochet hook, but your child may work better with one that's tapered. You might hold the hook like a knife while your child works best holding it like a pencil. Try out different yarn options and hook sizes. Show your child that there are different ways to crochet and they are all okay! So thats it – my tips on how to teach a child to crochet – hopefully you have success – if so I’d love to hear about it.

I’ve found great success in teaching both my 7-year-old daughter and the teenagers I taught in 7-12 grades in public school (my English students who needed an activity to focus their mind and keep their hands to themselves) with a crochet hook that is one or two sizes larger recommended for the yarn at hand. Finished one of my crochet pattern makes? I’d love to see it and so would the world, so get sharing! You can find me in the following ways: Yarn can come in different colors, textures, weights, and more. Some kinds of yarn are better for clothing, while others might work better for a washcloth. Since different types of yarns are geared towards specific projects, research what kind of yarn will be best for the project your child is working on. Then it’s onto the US Double crochet, and this does take some explaining – the hardest part is where to put the hook. So I use a stitch marker – you can find out about this by reading my granny square post here. I’ve been teaching people to crochet for over 5 years now, and have learned a lot in that time about what works to make sure kids and adults both learn, and can enjoy this great craft. This post is about how to teach a child to crochet specifically, but all information here can easily be used for adults too. Why you should learn to crochet?Knowing how to do a single crochet stitch is all you need to be able to make this simple textured pillow. The Pixie Creates shares instructions on how to make this crochet pillow. 18. Crochet Glasses Case You can teach children of almost any age to crochet. For example, if your child is able to sit for a short period of time and use a pencil, they have the capability to learn how to crochet. A word of note – even though Amigurumi (the cute little toys) look cute, they require a lot of counting and a nice even stitch to look good. I’d personally leave these until granny squares and hats are completely mastered and practiced to stop the child getting disheartened as it probably won’t look like the picture they’ve seen in the pattern!) Is it difficult to teach a left hander to crochet? While these crochet for kids granny squares may seem difficult to make, your child will find these squares quite easy after some practice. Sarah Maker provides its instructions to make these classic granny square patterns. 4. Chunky Ribbed Crochet Beanie A tape measure or ruler is beneficial to use when making an item of a certain size. While it’s not necessary, it is a good way to ensure the accuracy in sizes of certain items.

Unfortunately, these days crocheting is becoming a lost art. Which means the beautiful creations (and brain connections) that come with crocheting will soon be gone. Unless we start teaching our kids now the fine art of crocheting. If something doesn’t work, offer an alternative. The key is to get the momentum and interest going. You can offer a variety of simple projects for your child to choose from.Demonstrate crocheting to your child. An effective way for some children to learn is by letting them watch you try something first, then let them try it themselves. Recognise and affirm every step Individually, articulate what exactly they’re doing right. Have something positive to say, always. Is she holding the crochet hook perfectly? Is the yarn wrapped around her finger nicely? Offer encouragement as appropriate because this will make them feel good about their work and will most likely lead to faster progress. Show them how proud you are of them! Wouldn't it be great if learning how to crochet was integrated into children's schooling curriculums? While many people were forced into homeschooling because of the pandemic in 2020-2021, many gave crochet a go and you'll be fascinated to see the results! Head over to TikTok and type in crochet in the search bar! Try to start with smaller crochet projects. These are projects with simple crochet instructions and don’t take too long. For example, start with your child crocheting a bracelet or bow tie before having them try their hand at crocheting a blanket. Indeed, a ball is more expensive than a skein of Red Heart, but you can make a basket big enough to hold a basketball with NO HOOK (which can definitely lower the intimidation of crochet) in under two hours.

Choose a place to start your crochet lesson in a calming environment, where your child can focus on the task at hand and not be distracted by a television show or other kids playing around. Make sure there is good lighting and a comfortable place for the child to sit and have the wool lie next to them without rolling around too much. Perhaps you can put the wool in a basket and place it near them. Hook 1-2 sizes larger than suggested for the yarn for learning to chain and making simple squares/scarves where a pattern isn’t being followed.

There are so many different colors and styles of yarns out there, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. But don’t panic! I’m here to help. Then holding the hook in their “dominant crochet” hand, ask them to “wind/ wrap” the yarn around the hook (or go under – depending on how they are holding the yarn). You should be demonstrating this too at this point I know that in young learners, the aim is to keep fun and sense of accomplishment to a high and learning to read a pattern while they are still mastering stitches would be a mistake. For younger kids, you could explain what freeform crochet is… one not following a pattern, but rather using your creative imagination to create a piece of crochet. You could create specific shapes or forms using freeform crochet. You could turn a rectangle into a pouch or bag, for example, and embellish it with a cute round piece of crochet with a different colour.

If you’re looking for an online course to teach your kids how to crochet, this is the best we’ve found on the web. This beginner course teaches finger and hook. And while it’s geared towards kids, you could use it yourself too! Crochet for kids is a way for children to express creativity. Children are given the opportunity to choose color for their project, and they will need to make other project-making decisions. Boost Self-EsteemCrochet lessons can start when children are at young ages but it depends on the individual. Learning to teach kids to crochet is rewarding and provides them with a lifelong skill that they can work on improving every year.
