His work is amazing and I like people who keep their heart open although they were not always treated kindly. It just struck me as a bit simplistic and a little bit patronising but then you all know by now I'm sensitive to weight issues. Ah, now here’s the thing - in biology- the cross-linkage of collagen molecules in a non-anisotropic alignment is, in fact, commonly weaker than the original crimp pattern and when exercised may therefore tear again.

The Superpets (and Me!): Amazing True Stories of Incredible

Originally from Ballyfin, in Laois, Ireland, he moved to Guildford, Surrey, in 1993, [2] where he is director and managing clinician at Fitzpatrick Referrals. As much as I like Noel and the amazing work he does and all that he stands for, I liked and loathed this book in equal measure. I have battled with periods of profound depression and feelings of worthlessness throughout my life. He talked a lot about his love of Kiera, a little dog that he shares with a vet nurse because he is aware that his lifestyle is not one that would be fair for a dog. This was a tough read, especially as his beloved Keira was still alive but died whilst I was reading this. Two stars is not a reflection on the author but on the editing, even though it appears there were quite a few involved in the process. I got a self help book and a philosophy book as well as a book on transcendental meditation and buddhism. It was this bond with Pirate, and a fateful night spent desperately trying to save a newborn lamb, that inspired Noel to enter the world of veterinary science - and set him on the path to becoming The Supervet. Now, in this long-awaited memoir, Noel recounts this often-surprising journey that sees him leaving behind a farm animal practice in rural Ireland to set up Fitzpatrick Referrals in Surrey, one of the most advanced small animal specialist centres in the world.

Beyond Supervet: How Animals Make Us The Best We Can Be

Steve Wright in the Afternoon: Russell Howard, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, JJ Chalmers, Ade Adepitan". In 2014, Fitzpatrick was recognised by Guinness World Records for being the first veterinary surgeon to conduct that operation. Fitzpatrick and his team at Fitzpatrick Referrals have been the subject of television series, including The Bionic Vet [16] [17] and The Supervet. He recounts the animals and people he has met along the way and the impact they have had on his life, and the difficult decisions that often have to be made and the ethics behind it. He has gone on to specialize in Neuro and Ortho cases, to develop new procedures and new prosthetics for animals, lecture in the UK and Us and open his own hospital, as well as appearing in The Supervet on television.I just found myself not knowing what the purpose of the book was other than to make money and as someone who has seen most of the animal cases he talked about on the programme not even that was new. He has been cast in two episodes of ITV's Heartbeat as vet Andrew Lawrence, first broadcast in November 2002, [26] and as sheep rustler Gabriel broadcast in January 2000. I did enjoy discovering how he got his practice up and running and the hurdles he met along the way. Noel Fitzpatrick was a bit of a lonely boy growing up on a rural Irish farm, who develops an persona of Vetman - someone who protects and looks after all animals.

How Animals Saved My Life: Being the Supervet by Noel How Animals Saved My Life: Being the Supervet by Noel

He's obviously very passionate, talented, incredibly intelligent and forward thinking about science. I learnt a lot about the veterinary industry, and took a lot from his outlook on life and how to be more grounded when times are tough. but as his TV series shows, he has come out the other side shining and successful - there's one up to those bullies! The middle section covers vet school and his early days as a vet, and was for me the most enjoyable part of the book, with some amusing anecdotes to leaven the continuing negativity.

As someone currently studying to be a veterinary nurse this book gives me motivation to keep going at my studies. All in all a good read provoking some insightful discussion around the future of veterinary (and human) medicine. As heart-warming and life-affirming as the TV show with which he made his name, Listening to the Animals is a story of love, hope and compassion, and about rejoicing in the bond between humans and animals that makes us the very best we can be. This can be a difficult read not only because there is a lot of technical stuff in it but also because it can be difficult to see through the tears.

I actually found this provoked a strange mixture of admiration for what he has achieved (and sacrificed) but also quite hard going as it delves into some very deep and important issues, this wasn't helped by the writing which I found quite inaccessible and difficult to understand and certain concepts were repeated almost verbatim several times, maybe this was done deliberately to provide emphasis, but I found it a bit irritating. Now, thanks to Noel, there’s a hope within the field that he could undergo procedures that could lead to a long and healthy life. Overcoming all of that, he continued with schooling and studying to become the extraordinary and very talented man he is today who has saved so many creatures through his remarkable knowledge and skills. This book is very different from the first, it is essentially a journey of spiritual discovery, acute mental and physical suffering, and eventually healing, is effect this is a book about the complexity of the human condition, finding inner peace and quieting the demons. It has been 30 years since Noel Fitzpatrick graduated as a veterinary surgeon, and that 22-year-old from Ballyfin, Ireland, is now one of the leading veterinary surgeons in the world.
