Craghoppers have joined forces with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to create a range recommended for the DofE Expedition Kit list. The kit is tried and tested by dedicated DofE Ambassadors, to ensure it is fit for your great adventure! While this might be one of the more expensive pairs of boots in this round-up, they’re still incredibly good value considering everything they offer. We actually liked these so much that we chose them as the best boots for the whole of 2019. What do they offer? A lot. They’re comfortable over long distances, protective but still breathable, and they boast some impressive eco credentials.

Ok, they went through streams, over the Yorkshire 3 peaks, up mountains and on as many dog walks that makes me lose count. Plenty of them muddy and wet. These boots are still going strong after a full season and still wear them daily in the great outdoors. The collar, the tongue, and the inner parts of the boot are comfy too, with extra padding for podiatry support. One of the interesting things about this women’s shoe is how rugged and smart it is. There is the look of a more high-end masculine boot here, but you still have the shape and sizes needed for women’s feet. A Dri-Tec waterproof membrane keeps feet cool and dry, even in the wettest of the Great British weather. The smooth lacing system provides volume adjustment flexibility, and the lacing eyelets are all made from a solid metal which are shaped to capture the laces securely – the middle eyelet even has little gripping teeth. Because they are leather, they don’t look like your standard walking boots, which means they look good with more than just your normal walking gear. With my old walking boots, and even in my snowboarding boots, I find I get slight heel rise/rubbing, but with these boots, my feet stay in place, which means no rubbing and no painful blisters. For once, let’s start with the downsides: with more of a trainer than boot feel, the Peakfreaks don’t offer especially firm protection or stability for the ankle, and the lightweight materials aren’t as tough or rugged as all-leather boots. But, with the Peakfreaks, the numerous positives far outweigh the negatives. Columbia’s Outdry technology is a one-piece membrane that seals the stitching and any other water ingress vulnerabilities. This ensures excellent waterproofing and breathability for these lightweight boots. Meanwhile the Omni Grip outsoles have multi-directional lugs for good grip out on the trail. So what do I like about these walking boots? Actually, that’s a pretty easy question to answer, because I haven’t really got anything at all negative to say about them. They provided a snug, but comfortable fit from the first time I wore them, and after months of wear, I am pleased to report not a single sore point or blister. I do miles and miles per week over all terrains. Dog walks, muddy walks, day rambles and dry rugged mountains home and abroad. The boots I wear get hammered so I am not able to get just any old pair for any price. I was kindly offered a pair of Hi-Tec Ravine Waterproof boots to put to the test, and they are doing a remarkable job. For hot summer days, it might run a little hot, but still this is a real all-rounder of a boot. BUY NOW: SALOMON.COM

All in all, we were pretty impressed for the price. We wouldn’t take them out on longer expeditions or in gnarly weather, but they have plenty to offer for such a small price-tag. The Hi-Tec Ravine Hiking Boots have the simple specification and design that a lot of regular walkers are after. There is also no messing around with the design or any extra details. There is some branding on the side and the tongue, but the rest is a pretty clean dark brown leather. I found these to be great ‘on and go boots’, no stiffness or rubbing from the outset. These were to be tested through the Winter too so I was going to give them a good testing that is for sure.

Tog24 Ingleborough Vibram Waterproof Boots

The third iteration in the popular Quest series, this is a boot designed for fast and light hiking on technical terrain – think trail walking in the Pyrenees or scrambling in Snowdonia. Salomon say it was developed with running shoe-adapted technology, the evidence of this being a slightly flexible chassis and a low-ish overall weight. There is a nylon midsole insert to provide better cushioning and just enough padding around the top of the boot. If you’re wanting to get into walking and fancy yourself as the next Arthur Wainwright, there’s only one way to find out if you’re cut from the tough stuff – by buying a cheap pair of walking boots and heading out into the hills. I’ve had my Hi-Tec Ravine Walking Boots for several months now, so I’ve had the opportunity to wear them out and about a fair bit. As well as wearing them for casual weekend walks, I’ve worn them on several camping trips (in terrible weather), and have also been on a couple of major hill walks in them, including our recent walk at Kinder Scout. Mens Hi-Tec Brown Ravine

I really liked the way the boots lace and I found them to be amazingly comfortable. The way the eyelets work give you effectively two different lacing ‘zones’. I personally prefer my boots nice and tight both over the top of my foot and around my ankle, so the lacing system on these boots is ideal for me. The recessed eyelet halfway up allows you to change the tightness of lacing in that area if you want to. I keep mine nice and tight, and found it really came in handy when I took a tumble – and I was very thankful that the good ankle support provided by the boots meant no sprained ankle! They are not entry level boots for the price, but, for the price I find them comparable and just as great as some brands charge a lot more for. One report from a user found the book lost its shape and some of its weatherproofing after a while. You could end up with a more relaxed fit and may benefit from adding a protective coating.
