A 1991 landscape-changing release from the pioneering hip-hop group, The Low End Theory embraced a minimalist approach and set the tables for the alternate rap movement that followed. The DJ built songs out of layer upon layer of sampled instruments and other sound fragments, most of which he processed, looped and re-arranged far beyond recognition. The album is considered to be a landmark work in the instrumental hip hop movement, with DJ Shadow's innovative sampling techniques and arrangements influencing other producers to create similar sample-based works.

A seminal, incredibly influential hip hop release (also regarded as pretty much the last word in instrumental ‘trip hop’, a term used a lot at the time), Endtroducing is simply one of the defining albums of the 90s. There’s an Abbey Road Half - Speed Master of the original LP, as well as a separate 7” fe aturing Cut Chemist’s classic remix of ‘The Number Song. Donuts began simply enough as an idea to turn a particularly good demo beat tape into a full-length release, and has since became a classic hip-hop album, one of the defining works of J Dilla's life. Through a combination of tireless record collecting and mastery of the sampler, DJ Shadow crafts cinematic grooves out of rock, jazz, soul, hip hop, electronica, archive interviews and anything else he can get his deeply refined hands on. While most of the tracks are compiled by layering samples from vinyl treasures found in used-record bins, the production quality of the mosaic is unmatched.Davis is not only a master sampler and turntablist supreme, he is also a serious archeologist with a world-thirsty passion for seeking out, uncovering and then ripping apart the discarded graces of some other generation, that pile of broken dreams, and sewing them back together into a tapestry of chronic bleakness and beauty. They both bear the black labels BUT the first one is definitely a digitally sourced record when the latter is the same pressing as the original from 1996. In the United Kingdom, where DJ Shadow had already established himself as a rising act, Endtroducing.

By the time Beastie Boys convened to record the follow-up to their debut, Licensed To Ill, they'd painted themselves into a corner. The samples Shadow used are often poor quality recorded sources anyway from scratchy old 7" singles, which were then put straight to DAT after coming out of the Akai MPC60 sampler, so you can forget about the 'analogue chain' argument here - this is as good as it is gonna get. will always hold a special place in my heart because it represents the year that I released my first album. stars out of 5 - "It's an elegy from a vinyl mausoleum, a sonic fiction assembled by a keen-eared archaeologist. Two of hip hop's most brilliant minds and prolific artists met on 2004's Madvillainy which features music by Madlib and words by MF Doom. Innovative arrangements and structures of sound are present here, reflecting a mind that is constantly summoning collage forms. What resonated about Endtroducing when it was released in 1996, and what makes it still resonate today, is the way in which it loosens itself from the mooring of the known and sails off into an uncharted territory that seems to exist both in and out of time. There are some interesting phasing effects that are well realized on speakers but I'd say that this album is probably just as at home on good headphones as speakers.

The narration samples come from numerous sources and keep the listener involved and waiting for resolution. The way I describe this albums' soundscape would probably be akin to The Matrix if the sequels were actually on the same level as the original: hypnotising and fills you with a unique and unabashed feeling of ecstasy while paying many indebted homages. An instrumental album entirely composed of samples and influenced by both prog rock and Public Enemy was, at the time, revolutionary. There’s been so much disruption to our daily li ves, not to mention means of income, that it feels almost inappropriate to promote myself and my music. received universal acclaim from critics, who praised DJ Shadow's approach to sampling and the beats he created from samples.Features the singles 'Midnight in a Perfect World', 'Stem' and 'What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1)'. Nowhere on the sleeves nor labels do the words "Originally released in 1996" appear on this release.
