I think this is a fairly good book overall, but I found it somewhat disappointing in several important aspects.

Liam: Uncle to Sean and tenant to Peter's father ("farms my father's glebe" [6]), who rides with them to Cork, and takes the horses home. Mr Saumarez: He is a lieutenant aboard HMS Centurion, who holds Mr Saunders place when he is sent to be captain on HMS Tryal. He is based on a real person in the Royal Navy. [7] Certainly the book improves once we are on board the Centurion and the Irish dimension is not so prevalent. Its a marvellous seafaring story about Commodore (Later Admiral) George Anson, and his circumnavigation of the globe, and with him as a midshipman is a poor Irish man called, Peter Palafox. The Golden Ocean” (1956) by O’Brian is his first historical sea-going novel, and it shows. There is a lot of promise in the material but the presentation is a bit uneven, with odd shifts in narration and leaps through time. At times though, we can see the first stirrings of the later O’Brian, he of the 21-volume ‘Aubrey and Maturin’ series that I devoured inside 2 months late last year and thoroughly enjoyed for the most part.Birgitte Ringstad Vartdal, CEO of Golden Ocean Management AS and Robert Hvide Macleod, CEO of Frontline Management AS jointly commented: “It is anticipated that IMO 2020 will create logistical marine fuel supply issues for shipowners globally. In addition to presenting a compelling economic opportunity, our participation in the JV will ensure our ability to source and acquire marine fuels at competitive prices on a continuous basis. This transaction represents yet another instance where we have been able to leverage our relationship with other entities of Hemen Holding Ltd to create significant economies of scale and a real competitive advantage. We look forward to working with Trafigura, our JV partner, to create one of the world’s leading suppliers of marine fuels.” The Golden Ocean is one of O'Brian's earlier works and a forerunner of his seafaring, Aubrey/Maturin series. As such it's a little rougher around the edges and as a one-off, it is not quite as engaging, since you're not invested in the characters for the long haul. Good yarn about Anson's 1740-44 trip around the globe, which included the capture of a Spanish galleon carrying over a million pieces of eight (the share for each seaman was something like twenty years' labor; Anson himself earned over 90,000 quid!). The tale is told from the perspective from a young Irish midshipman, Peter Palafox, who receives his berth despite never having seen a ship. Sean O'Mara: He comes along for the excitement and the glory, son of Peter's nurse. He runs very fast. He is accepted as Peter's servant and put in the crew, where he advances for his good work.

Also, Sean thinks the earth is shaped like a cheese and Mr Saumarez wishes to press the devil into the service. I love this book. Mr Elliot: Midshipman who helps Peter to understand the trigonometry after Funchal. He dies of scurvy while ship goes so slowly around Cape Horn. The Sargasso Sea supports a range of endemic species and plays a critical role in supporting the life cycle of a number of threatened and endangered species such as the Porbeagle shark, the American and the European eel, as well as billfish, tuna and several species of turtle, migratory birds and cetaceans.TheSargassummats are home to many endemic species and provide a protective ‘nursery’ for juvenile fish and turtles. Walter, Richard (1748). A Voyage round the World, In the Years 1740-1744. London: John and Paul Knapton. Compiled by Richard Walter (ca 1716-1795), Chaplain to his Majesty's Ship the Centurion. ANSON, George (1697-1762) Kenneth Dam, Trafigura’s Co-Head of Bunkering added: “Over the past 24 months, Trafigura has been growing its physical bunkering business worldwide. We believe that marine fuel market disruptions will be brought on by the implementation of IMO 2020 regulations and that the JV’s increased base volumes and greater access to both infrastructure and credit will provide increasingly competitive bunkering supply services to our customers. We are confident in our ability to supply quality products at competitive prices to the fleets controlled by the JV partners as well as to third party shipowners and operators.”a b Household, H. W. (1901). "Anson's Voyage Round the World. The Text Reduced". London: Rivingtons . Retrieved 28 June 2015. One interesting factoid about The Golden Ocean, it is one or two retellings of the same voyage that O'Brian novelized. The other is titled The Unknown Shore. The Golden Ocean isn't as fully realized in character development and plotline as his future writing would be. However, there is still plenty here for fans of historical fiction (or, in this case, fictionalized history!) to enjoy. Anson's circumnavigation of the world actually occurred. This use of actual events to wrap a story around is another one of Mr. O'Brian's usual devices for establishing the settings for his tales. Anna and Industry: two store ships meant to part when the stores could be transferred to the squadron over and over again. Peter stood, contemplating the pink-cheeked singer and wondering first where FitzGerald was and secondly how this child could have got aboard; and presently the song came to an end.
