Although the hijab, the headscarf, is required by Islam, the veil that covers the face is not. Nonetheless, few women show their face on the streets. The veil is commonly called a burqa, but in Yemen they also call it lithma. Thawb or thoob or thobe – loose and long-sleeved ankle-length garment. It’s a formal outfit, often worn by men for special occasions. But this garment is so comfortable and perfectly suits the hot Yemeni climate that the local men usually prefer it to Western-style clothes even in daily life. Traditionally, thoobs are light-colored (white, beige, light brown, etc). This folk garment is worn in many countries throughout the Arab world.

The Middle East may have changed a lot in terms of technology and development. But when it comes to fashion, tradition and culture dominate the scene. For this reason Arabs take pride in maintaining their historical dress code. Ibn Hajr al-Haytami (Allah have mercy on him) said, taqannu‘ is to place a sheet of cloth on top of the headgear or turban, which would be used to cover part of the face. It would then be wrapped under the chin and thrown onto the shoulders.To maintain the shawl, hand-wash it separately in cool water with a small amount of delicate non-biological detergent. The green garment is a garment that has green stripes; it is exactly like the red hullah (suit). Whoever thinks that the red hullah was pure red should also say that the green garment was pure green, but no one says that.Yemeni fabrics were known throughout the medieval Islamic world for their style and strength. The characteristic pattern seen in this textile results from the ikat technique. Cotton warp threads in shades of brown, blue, and white are bundled together and resist-dyed before being woven. The ikat-dyed threads are then arranged on the loom so as to form a pattern of arrowheads and diamonds. Thin brown cotton weft threads weave the pattern together.

There are loads of cheap jambiyas around that are made in China, but the real expensive ones, which are usually passed on from father to son, give status to a man. I’ve seen jambiyas that are worth tens of thousands of dollars. He wore rings; the hadiths differ as to whether he wore his ring on his right hand or his left hand. All of the hadiths have saheeh isnaads.The Metropolitan textile and other gilded ikats are dated and attributed to Yemen by association with the single extant historically dated ikat, which is located at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The Cleveland ikat contains a legible inscription with the name of an imam of Yemen, Yusuf b. Yahya, who reigned from A.D. 955 to 1003. The plaited kufic script in the Cleveland fragment is much less flamboyant, probably so that its historical inscription could be more legible. The inscription on the Metropolitan textile assumes that a viewer would understand its meaning; it is written more loosely, allowing the ornamented kufic to sprout and grow more freely. The generic blessing of this ikat suggests that it was destined for the open market. Today, a majority of the Arab men wear keffiyeh, also called shemagh. It is basically a traditional square cotton scarf which is placed on the head and secured with an igal. Different tribes, countries and even neighborhoods have their own traditional colors for the keffiyeh.
