Subconsciously, those kinds of scary folk tales and the magical, sweet fairy tales that I grew up reading meshed together on this project, which was so perfect with Petra—she loves that aesthetic of blending something beautiful with something a little ugly or sexy or even terrifying. I loved every chapter of this book, and what stuck with me were the themes of being okay being alone, as well as sexuality and sensuality for the purpose of womens joy.

While Collins was mostly raised in the suburbs of Toronto, her mother fled Hungary in the 1980s, when it was still under Soviet rule. Demie represents womxn through different lenses, all with outcomes of alienation and objectification.Once upon a time, in the far-off kingdom of Los Angeles in the summer of 2020, photographer Petra Collins and Euphoria star Alexa Demie found love at first sight.

Pre-release, it had already been solidified in pop-culture history with content creators mimicking the ethereal style on social media. Part of the reason we did these characters is that everyone, especially because of the pandemic, has been living on the internet more than they ever have,” Collins notes. this is definitely a prized possession and i will forever be changed after witnessing it in all her glory. The soft focus and dreamy photography depict the truthful chaos and survival of mythical beings in a mortal world. Fairy Tales’s cast of banshees and sprites and fallen angels may appear to have been tied up or subjugated by a villain, but look a little closer and you’ll notice that the mermaid has bound herself up in shibari ropes or the sirens are, in fact, sliding down stripper poles under the eerie spotlights of a seedy nightclub. As children, Petra and Alexa were both enamoured with fairy tales, which provided an escape from their own painful realities.

It felt half-baked, stories obviously being made up afterwards in an attempt to form some sort of narrative for each photo series in each chapter. Now more than a year later, the fruits of their labor are being released in a lavishly illustrated, 152-page hardbound book, Fairy Tales, out next week from Rizzoli. Most of these stories do not make any sense, but Alexa Demie looks great so I can’t say that I’m disappointed because I got exactly what I was expecting when I got this book. Hungary as a nation was dealing with being under a Soviet regime, so a lot of that work came out of collective trauma. The stories by themselves are quite one-dimensional, but completely come to life with the photography.
