Author: Sally Thorne lives in Canberra, Australia, and spends her days writing funding submissions and drafting contracts (yawn! I just don't even know what this means, why was this written, why do you want to keep saying this in your novel. Even the offer for a promotion – apart from one sentence wherein Lucy mentions having more scope to implement initiatives – becomes another game.

I can’t speak for that lived experience, but it’s like made into a big thing and so this was just a little thing that bothered me because I didn’t even find out how tall she was exactly until like 3/4 through. It’s a weird bag of “we’re the only people who can take each other’s shit” which only leads me to believe that they’re both assholes. If you follow me on Twitter or have read other reviews by me, you might know that I am not a fan of the short and petite heroine thing. Whether he intended to make her feel that way or not, there’s a lesson to learn in taking the time to consider how others might interpret your actions, regardless of your motives. Now they're up for the same promotion and Lucy, usually a determined people-pleaser, has had enough: it's time to take him down. Sally Thorne creates a humorous dynamic between the pair that sees them constantly competing - the aim of their game to make the other smile or cry. I read it in a matter of hours, because I just had to find out what would happen next, + I’m way too much of a sucker for hate/love situations to be able to put this down.

She was a little over-stalkery, ngl, and at times took it over the top, but on the whole I felt she was a really well developed and fleshed out character. A witty writing voice combines with spot-on timing to make sure this novel is difficult to put down! The story revolves around two executive assistants at a publishing company who are pitted against each other to win a big promotion. But when an elevator ride leads to a steamy, hot as hell kiss Lucy starts to wonder if she's got it all wrong. She lives with her husband in a house filled with vintage toys, too many cushions and a haunted dollhouse. He’s superior and snooty, controlling and overbearing, taking every opportunity to put her down, to the point where she becomes worried about the consequences of showing vulnerability. The fact that Josh talks about the games they play supports the fact that their dynamic isn’t entirely fabricated in Lucy’s head, but it is a pet peeve of mine when a character (or person, for that matter) decides to speak for someone else. We learn that Lucy used to work in the Gamin publishing house but both the companies had to merge due to the recent climate in publishing.
