Description

XCOM: The Board Game is very challenging, so players can expect to lose a lot of games. Anyone who doesn’t like a game that is really difficult may not XCOM very much. Even after playing on the tutorial setting and the lowest difficulty, the game is still very hard to beat. It's risk. Pure, tempting, sometimes essential risk. And it's the kind of risk-taking that just has to be done on a board, with physical dice. The XCOM theme is certainly there in this game, but it isn’t as strong as I expected it to be. In the video games, you go on missions and fight off aliens in different environments with a squad of soldiers. In XCOM: The Board Game, you play as people behind the scenes that have to handle events all over the world simultaneously. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it just doesn’t really feel like a board game version of the video games. UFO: Aftermath is a 2003 single-player PC strategy and real-time tactics game which was heavily influenced by the X-COM series and used elements of the Mythos Games' canceled The Dreamland Chronicles. It was created by Czech company ALTAR Interactive and published by Tri Synergy.

The app also times the game really well – I don’t think there’s a fixed number of missions before the final mission but I always feel like the final mission comes just when we’re at the point of a near failure or when I’m starting to feel like I’ve played enough standard rounds of the game. The Commander controls the team’s budget, recruitment of new troops, manufacturing of new planes and deploys the air forces to shoot down UFOs. The Squad Leader controls the team’s ground forces who both defend the XCOM base from invasion, and complete external missions. The X-COM core series consisted of four main games published by MicroProse: UFO: Enemy Unknown (also known as X-COM: UFO Defense, PC and Amiga in 1994, Sony PlayStation in 1995), X-COM: Terror from the Deep (PC in 1995, PlayStation in 1996), X-COM: Apocalypse (PC in 1997) and X-COM: Interceptor (PC in 1998). The premise of the franchise is that an alien invasion beginning in 1999 prompts the creation of a clandestine paramilitary organization codenamed X-COM (an abbreviation of " E xtraterrestrial Combat") by a coalition of funding nations. The player is charged with leading this force and tasked to secretly engage and research the alien threat. The sequels, against new alien invasions, are set underwater ( Terror from the Deep, set in 2040), in a futuristic megacity ( Apocalypse, set in 2084), and in space ( Interceptor, set in 2067 and making it a prequel to Apocalypse). Laser Squad Nemesis is a 2002 low-budget PC turn-based tactics game developed by Gollop's next company Codo Technologies and very similar to the turn-based Battlescape combat system of the first X-COM. In 2005, Codo Technologies and publisher Namco also released Rebelstar: Tactical Command, a Game Boy Advance turn-based tactical role-playing game that too was reminiscent of the early Battlescape system. Rebelstar series: precursor games to both Laser Squad and the X-COM series, also created by the same developers.

Each task has a threat level that starts at “1,” and even as you roll your pool of blue XCOM dice, you roll a single red enemy die. So long as the result of the enemy die is higher than the task’s current threat level, you can choose to reroll all the dice in your pool, both the XCOM dice and the enemy die. In this way, you can continue to mount your desperate defense of humanity, even as the aliens intensify their efforts.

The Commander is responsible for managing XCOM’s budget and must be foresightful enough to know when best to access the organization’s emergency funding and how best to allocate it. Each time you push in this way, you increase the task threat by one step. So long as your keep rolling results on the enemy die that are higher than the task threat level, your XCOM soldiers maintain the good fight. However, if the result of the enemy die is equal to or lower than the current task threat level, you start to suffer losses. You’ll lose soldiers or Interceptors. Your satellites may go offline. Your scientists will suffer fatigue or succumb to alien diseases and won’t be able to continue until they’ve recovered.
