The book has a captivating plot, with interesting characters that I am sure children will enjoy reading. Ten-year-old Zoe discovers a small rowboat and keeps it a secret until she sets out alone on the great sea to find her parents. I love Marcus Sedgwick and his writing style and this being his debut novel was clearly a stepping stone for his future work to come. The idea behind this post apocalyptic world was fascinating and it wasn't too preachy seeing as it is a possible eventuality of global warming. In fact, I think I like the story-telling more this way than if another hundred or so pages of explanation and backstories had been added: the reader has to make some leaps along the way.The doom that prevails is beautifully crafted as is the glimmer of hope that pulls us through the book with its magnetism. So bleibt es eher auf dem Niveau von Büchern, die man 14-Jährige zwingt zu lesen, die somit an den Ernst der Welt denken sollen . I love dystopian fiction and the setting of a flooded, sinking England in despair is a brilliant premise for a story and very relevant today with climate change and global warming. Yes, it wasn't as good as most of the books I've read in my life, but it's definitely not the worst story ever. However Zoe is a gutsy little girl and survives long enough to find her boat, make an ally and to escape in the middle of a battle and continue off to find her parents.

Half way to what’s left of the mainland she comes across another small isle that is dominated by huge Cathedral. After seeing Floodland used in a Year 5 class on my last placement I was pleasantly surprised at its many uses within the classroom and its cross curricular links. Along the way she ends up at another Island where she gets herself into a tricky situation and well I won't spoil any more.

The Kiss of Death was published in paperback in April 2009, and picked up a thread from his highly acclaimed My Swordhand is Singing (winner of the 2007 Booktrust Teenage Book Award). Based in a post apocalyptic world (the future of the world if global warming keeps happening) it approaches many themes. I encourage readers to start exploring the climate fiction genre more, but not necessarily with this title. I enjoyed listening to the children's interesting discussions about how we can reduce the effects by changing our behavior. His books have been shortlisted for many awards, including The GUARDIAN CHILDREN'S FICTION AWARD, the BLUE PETER BOOK AWARD, the CARNEGIE MEDAL and the EDGAR ALLAN POE AWARD.Unfortunately, despite glaring allusions to "Lord of the Flies" and a couple of mystical references à la William Blake, the whole fails to equal the sum of its parts. Set in the near future on the east coast of England that has been reclaimed by the sea it tells the story of a girl who, having been mistakenly left behind by her parents escaping from the flood, she heads off to find them but ends up in the hands of a mob of nasty men on a small island. Other notable award winning books include Floodland, Marcus’ first novel, which won the Branford-Boase Award in 2001, a prize for the best debut novel for children published in the UK each year; My Swordhand is Singing, which won the Booktrust Teenage Prize for 2007, and Lunatics and Luck, part of The Raven Mysteries series, which won a Blue Peter Book Award in 2011. Marcus also wrote with his brother Julian, and contributed to a short story collection with fellow YA authors. The polar ice caps have melted and the sea level has risen, slowly but inexorably, until most of low-lying eastern England is under water.

The best thing about this book is that if I do not know a word I can select it and directly the meaning of the word appears. I found the end to be a bit of an anti-climax after all the drama building in the first ¾ of the book. But Eels Island, whose raggle-taggle inhabitants are dominated by the strange boy Dooby, is full of dangers too.He is the author of several books, including Witch Hill and The Book of Dead Days, both of which were nominated for the Edgar Allan Poe Award. Marcus has also received two Printz Honors, for Revolver in 2011 and The Ghosts of Heaven in 2016, giving him the most citations to date for America’s most prestigious book prize for writing for young adults. The names of the lands and dwelling places are taken from Jerusalem and Blake’s visionary imagination). I've given it three stars rather than two though because the author wasn't to blame for the publisher's failure, while the story displays clear potential.
