Mozartkugeln are a type of candy that originated in Salzburg, Austria. The candy consists of a chocolate shell filled with a marzipan center. Mozartkugeln are named after the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was born in Salzburg. Blue Mozart Balls Other than Mozartkugeln and Mozart Balls, you may hear the chocolate treats called Mozart-Bonbons or Mozart

Mozartkugeln were invented by Salzburg’s Fürst family in the 1890s and have enjoyed a big following throughout Europe. Interestingly enough, Mirabell got one big win out of it all, and that’s the exclusive shape . It’s the only industrial producer allowed to make Mozartkugel that’s fully round. Other industrial producers must keep at least one side of the candy flat, which is why most Mozart candies are dome-shaped. Invented in 1890 by confectioner Paul Fürst as an homage to the composer, the candy, like Mozart himself, was born in Salzburg, Austria. Fürst’s bonbons are still produced by hand in Salzburg, where the family company is now run by the fifth generation of Fürsts. fine blend of hazelnut and pistachio marzipan and coated with glossy chocolate, is one of the best ways to ever As a little extra, I wanted to tell you a bit about how the Mozart chocolate balls are made. Note: One batch marzipan, one batch pistachio marzipan, one batch nougat, 2 cups dark chocolate wafers — this will make about 18 Mozartkugeln and you’ll have some pistachio marzipan and nougat left over. If you double the regular marzipan recipe you’ll have enough of the remaining ingredients to make around 30 Mozartkugeln. Another difference is the shape: only the industrial (Mirabell) ones are fully round (like in my pictures). The other ones are forced to be a bit flatter. And even the name has to be different: Mozartkugel vs. Mozart-Kugel. Yes, it seems that the Mozart chocolate candy balls are the subject of some hard commercial competition! Conclusion: the history of the Mozartkugel Making these wonderful confections is really just a case of whizzing up some marzipan and nougat, rolling into balls, and dipping in chocolate. Similar to Reber’s version that tastes and feels less chocolatey rich than Mirabell’s, it has a stronger focus on the pistachio-flavor marzipan — but without the alcoholic hint of the German competitor’s. I instantly felt a familiarity with the dominant flavor and pinpointed it to that of Pistachio Gelato, another favorite dessert (ice cream, in fact) of mine.
