They are doing incredible, brave and inspirational work.

Two variants– Peppermint and Bubblemint– have rolled into Sainsbury’s Local stores, with a view to launch the products into the retailer’s larger stores in the future, Milliways founder Tom Raviv told The Grocer. The impressive growth trajectory highlights the brand’s appeal in the light of a growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products. In pursuit of plastic-free perfection Milliways ingredients It turns out that pieces of gum are, in fact, tiny little pieces of gluey plastic which are discarded so freely that you can find them almost anywhere, years later – from underneath school desks to the soles of our shoes. According to Raviv, most gum isn’t disposed of correctly – in fact it’s the second most littered item on our planet – which, of course, goes on to cause permanent harm if it’s made from single-use plastic.” The result is a biodegradable product which typically takes between five to 12 months to break down. The actual rate of gum decomposition depends on various factors; most importantly where the gum is disposed. Huge thanks to all my sponsors for the upcoming foundation expedition of the Ocean Warrior Project to gather scientific data on the current state of the oceans in the arctic.

From Our Partners

We’re always thinking about the future and how our products can shape it, so we wanted to incorporate aspirational ‘futuristic’ hues into the designs, whilst still paying homage to the natural and sustainable ingredients we use in our chewing gum. It was also essential that we highlighted our plastic-free ingredients to differentiate Milliways from big gum brands that use petroleum-derived plastics in their recipe. A former M&A consultant, Raviv came up with Milliways after discovering conventional gum contained single-use plastics. The 100% biodegradable and sugar-free gumis available in four flavours: Peppermint, Bubblemint, Watermelon and Mighty Mint Unhappy with what was on offer, Raviv looked for a solution to curb the ongoing plastic-based gum pollution. Enter Milliways. Having an opportunity to get into well-located and accessible stores like Sainsbury’s just gets our brand out there and gets the message out there too,” Raviv said.

The capital raised will be used to fund ongoing expansion plans, bolstering the brand’s distribution across the UK, supporting impactful marketing campaigns and helping to facilitate international growth. Milliways, launched in London in January 2021 by 29-year-old entrepreneur, Tom Raviv, is a plastic-free alternative that “doesn’t compromise on taste or texture”. The gum is 100% biodegradable and sugar-free, using only plant-based ingredients in its range, which currently comprises four flavours: Bubblemint, Peppermint, Mighty Mint and Watermelon. When asked about other companies following in Milliways footsteps and creating sustainable, plastic-free gum, Raviv said he’d “be surprised if they didn’t notice the urgent need”.The challenger brand’s range of four flavours are 100% biodegradable and made using naturally derived and sustainably sourced ingredients. It said much of the chewing gum available in the market hadn’t changed in decades, adding that none of the offerings provided shoppers with “a healthy or natural choice”.

Launched in 2021, the zero-sugar, plastic-free and aspartame-free brand now boasts a 6,000-store strong distribution network, including listings with Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Pret, Costa, WH Smith and Whole Foods. While maintaining sustainability throughout our supply chain, we also need to deliver absolute quality and adhere to food safety standards,” says Raviv. Milliways, the plastic-free chewing gum brand, has secured a listing in over 150 WHSmith stores across the UK. A levy should be imposed on any chewing gum containing petroleum-based materials. This would deter consumers from buying dangerous products and would raise public funds for cleaning. In just over two and a half years, we have become the UK’s leading plastic-free gum company. This success reflects the demand for innovative products like ours, attracting opportunistic businesses to the space.” Feb 2022 --- UK-based chewing gum brand Milliways is calling for a change in government policy that would reduce single-use plastic pollution and educate consumers about the potentially harmful ingredients used in mainstream gum brands. Frequent meetings help us align with our suppliers, push R&D boundaries, and maintain a high-quality supply chain,” he says.
