Totally off topic and maybe even superstitious, but my Matriarch's sync freaks out when I have modular clock and usb midi plugged in, this could be a similar type of witchcraft at play. Each step has graduated lighting; the higher the modulation value, the stronger the button lights up to give you a clear visual on what’s going on in the sequence. I didn't listed this in my checklist because I wanted to focus on details that I couldn't find before in videos and manual. The SQ-64 comes with a diverse variety of music software from Izotope including “Ozone Elements” which lets you not only create songs but also master them using AI, “Skoove” which will help you improve your keyboard playing skills, “Reason Lite” DAW software, as well as software synths from Korg and other brands. Hitting the global button allows you to set various aspects of the device so it fits with the rest of your gear, including things like 5 or 10 volts for pitch output, CC control mapping and the like.

Probability dials down from 100 percent (where a step plays every time) to five percent (not often) and lends a nice degree of variation to your sequences. Each mode comes with a slightly different set of four possible parameters displayed on the screen and accessed with the knobs. The unit however does only ship with a USB cable so if you want to sequence some MIDI gear you need a adaptors which I think it pretty unacceptable not to provide. You can't set default value for lots of the parameters in your sequence (gate length) and you can only change value of multiple steps by holding the button. All of the patch sockets are on the back, which means I can’t butt the SQ‑64 up against my rack because of all the cables. Andertons Music Company is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, firm registration number 716155.

A single Mod output is fine for CV but perhaps a bit lacking over MIDI, because you’re most likely to use it for velocity which leaves you with no other modulation possibilities. The sequencer has to make a decision as to whether the next step will be one forward, one backwards, two forward or the same step. Reverse and Bounce are obvious enough, and Random sets the track off leaping from step to random step. Other pattern parameters are step offset - where you can dial in the step offset to shift the notes from step one - another useful way to create variations.

Updates - Five discontinued synthesizer products, Editor / Plug-In Editor for macOS are now available! The SQ-64 can be played in keyboard mode; though, while this is a handy trick, it’s not the most intuitive method for playing. Despite its wide array of features, controls and connections, the SQ-64 is just 18mm thick (38mm including the knobs and rubber legs) and is housed in a highly portable and elegant yet robust solid aluminium body that will provide years of reliable service.
