Description

The fence is made up of two parts. Uprights, also known as “sales” and saplings, known as the “weavers”. Most wattle designs are sleek and sturdy, built for strength and endurance. Each piece of wood used has been neatly trimmed and is of a uniform length and width. I love the look that other wattle builders achieve! We take pride in our eco-conscious approach by using natural and ethically sourced hazel for our fence panels. This not only benefits the environment but also ensures the long-lasting durability of your garden fencing.

This is my favorite wood to use because I can forage it where I live. It’s also strong enough to hold up to my climate. Willow is also appealing because even if it dries out, you can simply soak it in water for 24 hours and it will regain elasticity.

Once you have marked out the line of your wattle fence, make a mark every 8 inches along the guide line. Start on the left and work to the right. Continuous weave hazel hurdles are bespoke and unique for every customer and are normally built in-situ and normally in one piece. With this method it is possible to follow a curving line without any severe angles ruining the appearance of the hurdle. It can also be used in straight lines giving a beautiful unbroken look or to follow undulating ground or boundaries. Supporting posts are built-into the continuous weave and are not clearly visible.

We offer a wide variety of colours through the Dulux® Duralloy® powdercoat range of premium powdercoating that meets AS7315 and AAMA 2603 standards. Select your uprights and tap these into the wooden jig with a mallet. All uprights should be straight and spaced evenly apart. The plant needs to be able to rejuvenate and regrow. If you take too much from it, you can cripple it’s ability to recover. Having said that, however, most of these woods appreciate a good pruning now and then. It will actually help them grow stronger, straighter and better. In fact, a healthy willow is SO vigorous, it may not even notice you’ve taken anything at all! Incidentally, most of what you’ll find on wattle fencing if you do online research will be from the UK. The accents are fun AND they know what they’re talking about. Wattle is in their blood, so to speak. Their serf ancestors were using wattle in the days of the Norman kings. Newly cut, green wood is best and easiest. Willow is an exception as it can be soaked to become more supple. Use thin, long branches -or- larger saplings that are cut down the center (cleft) as ‘weavers’. (See video below on how to cleft a sapling.) The saplings you choose should belong enough to weave around at least three stakes (preferably more)for stability. This technique can also be used to make moveable panels or hurdles. Source: Hurdle making demonstration by Anguskirk / CC BY 2.0

I’m particularly fond of the look of wattle garden fence. The wood, the weave and the structure of wattle are all appealing to me. Traditional woods used in hurdle construction include hazel, willow and alder. However, you can make use of a wide range of different woods from your property or the surrounding area. a fabrication of poles interwoven with slender branches, withes, or reeds and used especially formerly in building. Some of my favorite wattle wood comes from fruit trees. If you have fruit trees to prune every spring, don’t waste them in the wood chipper! Use them to make wattle for not only a cheap garden fence, but also a beautiful one. Fruit wood is durable and supple.

A well-built wattle fence can last for a long time. No matter how large or small a fence you create, you can rest assured that it will continue to do its job for many years to come. Next, take your stakes and insert them along your fence line. Use a post driver or mallet to insert them firmly into the ground. Try to make sure that each stake is as vertical as possible. Optional: Remove Bark from Some or All Branches Hard wood is a good choice for the sales. Beware if you use willow as stakes as your fence just might take root and come alive, it will turn out strong, but you would need to trim it each year.
