In 1985, by now a writer for at least five years, Moore wrote Watchmen, a truly unique and original comic for its time. Unlike ‘proper’ comics which seek to continue their franchise for as long as economically possible, Watchmen was written as a limited, closed-arc story. It was written in twelve chapters, it was published in twelve chapters – and was so popular it became the first full comic story to be rebound in book form. Moore invented two things simultaneously, both by accident. “The 80s Comics Renaissance” and the “graphic novel”.

This book has whetted my appetite for (and may in fact be a primer for) Moore's upcoming second novel about Northampton, Jerusalem, which is due to come out later this year. dialect. It never becomes easy. It's much like the first time you read Shakespeare as a young child -- you recognize Partners In Knitting" (AD 1705) - two women are accused and convicted of witchcraft, whereupon one vehemently confesses the all of it, even as they are burned alive at the pyre. An excellent story (would love to run it on PSEUDOPOD.org) full of real human emotion, great period detail and interesting suppositions about demonology, "evil" spirit beings and an early glimpse of how time/creation might work (later expanded and detailed in JERUSALEM).

But I fear they'll likely give it a snobbish miss when they read the author bio and see that he's only and printed on heavy paper so the book has real heft to it. Merely holding the book is a pleasing experience.

The photo on the left shows Thomas Tresham’s Triangular Lodge, a folly outside Northampton encoded with references to the Holy Trinity via a profusion of triangles and tripartite details. Tresham’s Lodge is described in the Gunpowder Plot chapter of Alan’s novel; the triangles on my cover may be taken as a reference to this. Throughout, the image of the fire resonates between the tales, while Moore finds a different voice for each character – though most are inherently duplicitous in some manner, leading to a further commentary on the disparity between myth and reality, and which is more likely to endure over time. Gods should be acceptable in this mythical mainstream. But Alan Moore, on the other hand, has jumped the the target audience is the reader who already knows Alan Moore's name -- the fan of his award-winning work in the graphic novelSmith, Brydon. In the manner of his contemporary Neil Gaiman, Moore has the skill to convey his passion and allow the reader to at least glimpse through his eyes. Only the most jaded and cold-hearted among men could read his account of the dying Wise-Man, or the two witches, and not feel sympathy, even outrage. Like so many good writers, Moore is especially good at reminding us of what we already know, but forget too easily in the onward rush of survival; that we all love, we all feel pain, and we all must die. Phipps' Fire Escape" (AD 1995) - In which, in a postmodern flourish of meta-narrative, Alan Moore himself reflects on the preceding work, his reasons for attempting it, its connection to personal history, what he hoped to accomplish (while noting recurrences that he hadn't intended) and it's irrationality as an attempted occult ritual to seal the book and send it on its way as an evocation of Northampton, his home. And from here, you need only take a small step to set you on the road to JERUSALEM.... same locale in Great Britain's Midlands (near Birmingham, the urban basis for Tolkien's actual two towers), an area themes are loosely brought together in that last, authorial-voiced story. The whole is a work of surprising genius. Moore sees magic as a system to understand the "cold mechanics" of an area beyond scientific reach. But he knows he is open to ridicule. "I don't think many Booker writers would want to risk talking like this. It's like Brian Eno said about artists - they're superstitiously terrified of their own talent. If you really start thinking about 'inspiration', it's uncomfortably close to being spooky. It can make you sound silly."For the Alan Moore book, see Voice of the Fire.
